This hits home when I think about it all. This video is a nice reminder of 5 reasons why people think they look bad in photos. However, what was struck me was Photography's only job. Let's look past the settings and hone in what makes a portrait a portrait. Teri Hofford says the following. "Bodies and photography don't care about beauty standards, but we expect them to. Bodies are just biological organisms responding to a series of inputs, outputs, and genetics -- their whole job is to basically get you from point A to point B, keep you alive as long as possible, and they don't care what you look like doing it. Photography on the other hand was created to simply document a moment in a time, but somewhere along the way we determined that every single photo of us has to be absolutely amazing. But the truth is photography's only job is to capture a fraction of a second. But we've made these fractions of a second create some really big narratives like 'I look bad in photos' that prevent us from showing up and being present in our lives. So today I want to remind you that sometimes a fraction of a second is just a fraction of a second. Sometimes a body is just being a body." It's worth the watch. I've heard it all myself, when I do portraits and my favorite thing is taking someone's photo and hearing them say, "Wow, I actually really like that." and seeing the creative eye light up in them afterwards. I think of all the language we must understand in photography, body language is the most impactful. Some of my most favorite photos are the ones when the people didn't think I was capturing, or when they moved or laughed or smile, or even made a serious face when we were doing the captures and the real them came out. Queue the "Oh I wasn't ready, but...." comments. You can't buy memories from the memory bank after the time has passed. Conversely even though I am a professional (with opinions), what I think might be a bad photo might be someone's favorite photo -- case in point, I did a shoot recently where I was scrolling through things on the screen and I said "oh, that's not good" (for various reasons relating to ideas we had about the shoot all around) and the client stopped me said "I love that photo." I couldn't understand why myself, but it changed the dynamic of the shoot in a really good positive way. This is why I get so interactive with my clients when I shoot. I was trying too hard to mimic something, and it would've been a "meh" shoot if we had kept going with that ideal. Anyways, maybe half of this is even remotely related to the topic Teri is truly talking about, but that's the beauty of this too, I can take the lessons and see them for what they're worth in my own practice of photography. I encourage any photographer who regularly uses a camera to watch this.
