This is Part 1 of a 2-part series on the future of the "IT Paradigm." In Part 1, Michael Crispin and I, along with our two special guests Kevin Dushney and Joel Nichols, set the stage for how we arrived at this moment in time for the "corporate IT function" and the IT Leadership historically needed to "run the show." You can only begin to explore the future of the IT Paradigm once you can understand how it has evolved over the last 25 years to where we are today. Join us next week as we explore Part 2, where, now fully armed with the context of the past and present, we will look at the future and the possible new paradigms for IT. #calculusofit #itleadership #nextgenIT #decentralization #itorganization

Kevin Dushney and Joel Nichols joined Mike and me again to continue our conversation from last week on whether or not the IT Paradigm should be changed and how we might do that if we wanted to. Big topics in this episode: -The end of the CIO: Why do we still need a traditional CIO, and where is this role going? -The Chief Digital Officer (CDO): Is this even/was it ever a thing that could sustain itself? Where will it be in five years? -Chief Information Security Officer (CISO): Why exactly isn't the CISO leading IT? -Citizen development and low-code/no-code platforms and how much IT could (should) theoretically be pushed back into the enterprise - this dovetails wonderfully into decentralized IT where your IT "leader" is a policy maker/security wonk, and everyone else is responsible for IT in the company (e.g., turning shadow IT into company-wide IT) The bottom line is, what will the leader of tomorrow look like/be called/be expected to do? What will IT be called? What will IT do? It was an awesome episode, and though we left a lot of questions unanswered, we covered some significant ground. Key points: 1 - To run IT as we know it doesn't require a CIO. It requires the evolved ability (learned through substantial experience) to handle significant complexity simultaneously. 2 - Relationship building is at the heart of everything an IT Leader will ever do. 3 - You have to know what's going on everywhere, all of the time. 4 - You have to be able to have a sixth sense about time and emplace buffers everywhere. 5 - A "to the file" detailed enterprise view of the company's data is now table stakes. 6 - The types of people we hire in future IT will dictate the strategy whether we want them to or not. 7 - Employee Experience management will be instrumental to the success of any future IT strategy. Join us next week as Mike and I demonstrate our first virtual CIO (developed using GenAI). In just a few clicks, we will ask it to build an entire IT strategy (short and long-term), department, policies, and relationships. We may even have it give us a 2030 manifesto! It should be fun! #calculusofit #itleadership #futureofIT #onedoorcloses #anotheropens #vcio

Ever wondered how original thinkers manage to consistently bring forth innovative ideas? I recently stumbled upon an enlightening Ted Talk by Adam Grant that reveals a few counterintuitive characteristics of original thinkers, including strategic procrastination. In my industry, I particularly resonated with his suggestion to doubt the default to lead you to new ideas and improvements on old ones. For anyone looking to boost their creative potential, I highly recommend watching as Grant masterfully outlines what makes original thinkers tick here: https://lnkd.in/gRfNt2Ee. What are your strategies for fostering original thinking in your team? Let’s discuss below! #Innovation #Creativity #TedTalks #ProfessionalGrowth

I don’t see much meaningful value in the attention economy. So I reluctantly share this because of how powerful it is. This TED Talk is worth watching. You don’t have to agree with it all to have it make you think. I had the privilege of learning from Professor Scott Galloway at NYU, and his recent TED Talk is a must-watch if you're interested in understanding the intersections of technology, capitalism, society, and personal life. Elements of this are what drives the why and who I do business with today. Here’s a link to watch: https://lnkd.in/enYpD6Dk #Technology #Marketing #ScottGalloway #TEDTalks #NYUStern
