The IPBES Global Assessment Report on #Biodiversity and #EcosystemServices presents telling findings on the impact human activity has had, is having and can have on #nature and the #environment (with multiple negative flow-on effects for human wellbeing also). As an illustration, 75% of the planet's land area has been significantly altered, 66% of the #ocean is experiencing major cumulative impacts, 85% of global #wetlands have been lost as has half of the live coral cover on #CoralReefs, and around 1 million species of flora and fauna are threatened with #extinction (some within decades). Such loss of biodiversity is catastrophic for nature and humankind! Through our work and partnerships, at Island Conservation we aim to foster holistic restoration of #islands for #nature and people worldwide. Our #ConservationAction helps protect, preserve and restore invaluable and often unique ecosystems, contributing to what we envision as a world filled with vibrant biodiversity, resilient #oceans and thriving island communities. Celebrating International Biodiversity Day: "Be Part of the Plan" International Biodiversity Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the intricate web of life on Earth—biodiversity. The theme for 2024, “Be Part of the Plan,” serves as a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as The Biodiversity Plan. Biodiversity Under Threat: Biodiversity is in crisis. Over the past 50 years, wildlife populations have plummeted by 69%. Alarmingly, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) reports that 1 million species are facing imminent extinction. Human activities have already drastically altered three-quarters of the Earth's land and approximately 66% of its oceans. A Collective Responsibility: Addressing an issue as monumental and urgent as nature loss necessitates comprehensive change across all sectors of society. 🌍 This week, conservation leaders and practitioners are gathering in Bruges for the IUCN Regional Conservation Forum (RCF) for Europe, North and Central Asia. This crucial event is an opportunity to address regional conservation priorities while aligning efforts with global frameworks like the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Paris Agreement. 🌿During a thematic session organised by IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) -Europe, the Act30 Partnership and the challenges of achieving Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework were discussed. 📢 Verra has launched the first version of the Nature Framework! By enabling projects to quantify biodiversity outcomes and generate Nature Credits, the framework will incentivize widespread investment in measurable conservation and restoration activities benefiting nature and people. The Nature Framework is an asset methodology under Verra’s Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta) Program. Version 1.0 of the framework is a testing version that will evolve over time based on the experiences of the initial projects. 🌿 The SD VISta Nature Framework will drive critically needed finance to biodiversity conservation activities, contributing to Target 19 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.  🌾Companies seeking to bridge this biodiversity funding gap can purchase Nature Credits to support critical nature conservation and restoration activities and their nature-positive outcomes. Buying Nature Credits will also help companies secure their nature dependencies into the future. ➡️ Verra’s Nature Framework acknowledges the critical role that Indigenous Peoples and local communities have in stewarding global biodiversity.
