Since the wake of Hurricane Helene on September 26, 2024, more than 86% of U.S. health care providers have experienced significant shortages of IV fluids that are critical for patient care across the nation. Hurricane Helene’s impact has led to the temporary closure of Baxter International Inc.’s North Cove manufacturing facility in Marion, North Carolina, which is responsible for producing nearly 60% of the U.S.’s IV fluids. The implications of this shortage have been far-reaching, causing health care providers to feel the strain as they navigate increased demand for IV fluids in hospitals and clinics. In response to this nationwide medical emergency, our U.S. flagship, American RENOLIT Corporation L.A., immediately added production shifts to ramp up the development of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene (PP) films for the IV and dialysis market players, preventing a mass shortage of packaging solutions that are critical for patients requiring various medical treatments. In the wake of the devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Helene this September, communities and their healthcare systems continue to be impacted at a local and national level. Baxter’s North Cove facility in North Carolina, the lead manufacturer of IV solutions in the United States, has stopped production due to the significant flooding from Hurricane Helene. The Region 1 RDHRS is sharing resources from national organizations, as well as identified practices from hospitals currently responding to the supply chain disruption, which are designed to help facilities with conservation and mitigation strategies. These resources are not intended to be recommendations, advice or medical guidance and do not represent any specific endorsement but are being offered to healthcare systems to review, consider, and adapt as they see fit as they develop their own response plans. The Region 1 RDHRS will continue to provide resources and support in this dynamic situation. 📣 Resources can be found on the RDHRS Region 1 website and will be updated as the situation changes. https://lnkd.in/e5wwt3m7

Hurricane Helene’s impact goes beyond local devastation—it’s shaking up healthcare nationwide. The North Carolina plant that produces 60% of the country’s IV fluids has been forced to halt production due to flood damage, leaving hospitals across the U.S. scrambling for supplies. IV fluids are essential for critical care, emergency rooms, and surgeries—without them, patient care is at serious risk. As hospitals brace for shortages, it’s a sobering reminder of the vulnerability in our supply chains. Read more about the hurricane’s impact and why building resilience in healthcare manufacturing is now more crucial than ever. https://bit.ly/484281u #Healthcare #HurricaneHelene #IVShortage

The ongoing effects of Hurricane Helene, compounded by supply chain issues with Baxter Pharmaceuticals, have led to a nationwide shortage of IV fluids, particularly saline and lactated Ringer’s solution. This shortage is severely impacting healthcare facilities, and surgical centers should take immediate action to mitigate its impact on patient care. Here’s how you can manage during this critical shortage: - Assess Current Stock: Conduct an immediate inventory of all IV fluids in your facility. Prioritize essential and critical cases to conserve your current supply. - Alternative Treatments: Where possible, switch to oral rehydration solutions or other routes of fluid administration, such as subcutaneous delivery. Encourage pre-operative hydration with fluids such as water, Body Armor, Gatorade, or Powerade to reduce the need for IV fluids. - Adjust Surgical Scheduling: Postpone elective procedures that require IV fluids and focus on urgent or emergency cases to conserve remaining supplies. - Supplier Coordination: Maintain ongoing communication with suppliers. Explore alternative vendors who may still have IV fluids available, as Baxter Pharmaceuticals works to restore production. -Conservation Measures: Implement protocols to minimize waste of IV fluids. Review clinical practices to ensure that the lowest effective volumes are used without compromising patient care. -Collaboration with Other Facilities: Work with neighboring healthcare facilities to share resources and distribute available IV fluid supplies where needed. You can read Baxter Pharmaceutical's statement on the IV fluid shortage related to Hurricane Helene here: https://lnkd.in/gPg87FNV We understand this shortage poses a significant challenge, but proactive planning and conservation can help mitigate its impact on patient care. UHC will continue to monitor the situation as we provide updates. UHC recommends contacting your 3rd party medical supplier for additional guidance regarding the current IV fluid shortage as soon as possible. #IVFluidShortage #Baxter #HealthcareManagement #SurgicalFacilities #HurricaneHelene #EmergencyPreparedness #RiskManagement
