Dechar rechar, the process of rejuvenating a cask to extend its useability. The process itself involves scrapping or skiving the internal surface of the cask to expose new wood underneath, and remove the existing char layer. Then recharring the cask via firing - regarde! But why do we do it, other than because it makes very cool videos? 🥃 Flavour: As we age spirit in cask there are many complex degradation processes happening within the wood, as more and more flavour giving compounds are leached out. Exposing the wood to heat acts as a crucial catalysts for chemical transformations, increasing the flavour potential within the cask, which we can then draw out into our whisky. Additionally, exposing this rejuvenated wood to the water and alcohol mix within our cask leads on to further breakdown, through actions like hydrolysis, creating a plethora of flavour potential. 🔥 Char Char (TM Charmander 1997): As we burn the wood, a new layer of active char/Carbon is created. This char layer helps remove unwanted flavour congeners, and purifies our spirit. Think the Lincoln County process used for Jack, but on a smaller scale. 🌱 Rejuvenation is good for the Nation: By coopering and recharring a cask we can extend its useful lifespan for maturing whisky. Casks are already expected to last for decades, and this extends that time period further. This saves on buying as many new casks each year, and supports with the sustainability of the whisky industry. A cask could potentially last along as it takes for a new oak to grow and be turned into a cask to replace it. While recharring of casks might give them a new lease of life, it is important to note that the cask wont be 'as good as new' as some flavour compounds, such as Oak Lactone (Coconut), are present in the wood, and are not dependent on heat treatment etc. Once it's gone, it's gone. Here are some of my favorites: 🍝 When cooking pasta, place a wooden spoon across the top of the pot to keep the water from boiling over. A wooden spoon is hydrophobic, meaning it’s unable to absorb water, so it destabilizes the bubbles when they come in contact with it 🖌 Next time you have to paint, wrap an elastic band around the top and bottom of the open paint can. This allows you to wipe the brush on the elastic instead of the side of the can, preventing a big mess 👕 When ironing a shirt, flip it inside-out to easily iron over the areas that have buttons 🔥 If you're making a campfire and don't have sticks, tortilla chips make great kindling...I recommend cool ranch Doritos 🔌 Ever been using an extension cord and when there’s tension on it, it comes unplugged? Tie the two ends together in a knot before you plug it in...no matter how much tension there is, it'll stay plugged in 🍺 When at a restaurant or bar, to prevent a glass with condensation from sticking to the coaster, sprinkle a little salt on the coaster. That will give it just enough of a barrier to prevent it from sticking #️⃣ Did you know that percentages are reversable? So for instance, if I asked you what 4% of 75 was, that seems like a lot of math to figure out in your head. But if you flip it and do 75% of 4, which is 3….it’s much easier. Try it out!
