Creative Energy is developing a sewer heat recovery district energy system that can capture excess thermal energy from Metro Vancouver's nearby sewer main to provide virtually emissionless heating, eliminating the use of natural gas on-site and helping the development achieve net-zero carbon operations. This is achieved using centralized high-efficiency heat pumps, that can move heat from the sewer system and into the district energy system using only clean electricity from the B.C. grid. For peaking purposes, electric boilers will also be installed to complement the sewer heat recovery, while natural gas boilers are reserved for back up purposes only, ensuring the system has excellent resiliency through the use of multiple fuel sources and redundant capacity. Overall, Creative Energy's strategy will result in an annual emissions reduction of over 4,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases."
We marked a significant milestone for our Sen̓áḵw District Energy System project! We are thrilled to announce that we are currently underway with construction at the site, focusing on the civil scope of work. On Thursday, May 9 2024, we successfully and safely hot tapped two 400 mm connections into Metro Vancouver’s 1200 mm diameter sewer main, unlocking the primary heating source for the Sen̓áḵw development and its pathway towards a Net Zero future. For those who are new to this process, hot tapping is the process of drilling into a live pressurized pipe without shutting down the piping system. This high precision approach is required to maintain normal operation for one of the largest sewers that services downtown Vancouver. This demonstrates one of the largest value drivers of a district energy system – to recover waste heat on a community scale previously not attainable on a building by building basis. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and collaborative efforts of the Pacific Flow Control Ltd team and the Creative Energy team.
