I wrote about what outcome of the election means for journalism. If we take away one lesson from this whole election cycle, I hope it's this: The urgency to rebuild trust with communities and our audiences that have come to view mainstream media as out of touch with their lives has never been more acute. I also hope, pray at this point, that this moment will become a catalyst for renewal, innovation and growth for our industry. #StateofAbundance #election2024 #journalism #media #innovation https://lnkd.in/gen7s26T

Sarah Joseph makes a very powerful argument. But I am not convinced that the social media ban is disproportionate. We have to ask: does the ban show disregard or contempt to children’s right to political communication? And it is not obvious that it does. Social media is not the only way in which teenagers can be informed about politics. In fact, it is often a poor and superficial way to do so. Nor is it the only means through which teenagers can campaign about political issues. They can set up websites and use other online resources. The harm to children’s mental health is a given. By contrast, the harm to their freedom to political communication is not. The likely effect of a ban is that teenagers’ political engagement will simply change location, not diminish. Sarah is right that a lesser restrictive alternative is available: platforms can introduce better safeguards to prevent harm. But it seems unlikely at the moment that platforms will implement such safeguards effectively, given that there is a huge financial incentive for them not to do so.
I’ve expanded on my Conversation piece from last week for a German audience. I still think the social media ban could breach the Constitution:

When was the last time you tuned into your local news station? 📺 Or picked up a newspaper? 📰 Local news plays a crucial role in communities. It provides important information about immediate surroundings, such as local politics, weather forecasts, traffic conditions, and community events. Having access to this information makes it easier for community members to make informed decisions about daily life. Local outlets also cover stories that larger, national news outlets might ignore. Human interest stories, local sports coverage, and news about local businesses can foster a sense of shared identity and togetherness. Due to financial challenges, a lot of local news outlets have been disappearing at an alarming rate in recent years. They aren’t able to keep up and compete with larger, more well-known national outlets. Without the local news, however, residents will lose access to important information about their neighborhood, and local issues won’t get the attention they deserve. This could lead to lower levels of civic engagement, low political participation, and loss of community voices. Local news is the key to the health and vibrancy of our society, and its dying out is a serious issue that must be addressed. It’s important that we all understand the value of these outlets and support local journalism in whatever way we can. ❤️ The American Journalism Project offers an incredible list of articles and studies to further explore this topic: https://lnkd.in/eeXeaaVa #LocalNews #CivicEngagement #CommunityVoice

Political campaigning and media monitoring go hand in hand. 🤝 You can’t manage the reputation and image of politicians unless you’re fully aware of what people and media outlets say about them. Actually, (social) media monitoring can help you run successful political campaigns as it: 💥 Uncovers why the electorate sees a political candidate the way they do through sentiment analysis. 💥 Identifies key issues that matter most to your voter base (e.g. unemployment instead of climate change). 💥 Helps with crisis management as you can catch emerging issues, harmful to a politician’s public image, early on and hit disinformation and false accusations quickly. And more! Do you want to learn how to use media monitoring for effective political campaigns? Take a look below! #politicalmarketing #politicalcampaigns #mediamonitoring

Excellent recommendations from Angelica Das and Democracy Fund. A reminder to news organizations: It's not a good time to lean on old habits. Make that extra effort to ensure your policies and standards are clear both internally and externally, and that you very. clearly. label. opinion vs. news. State when facts are still emerging. Note anything created with AI. For funders: Contact me if you want access to our Trust Network of news sites deeply committed to integrity.
Worried about election misinformation? Angelica Das offers four ways that pro-democracy and journalism funders can act now: 1. Fund grassroots organizers and experts who are mobilizing against misinformation. 2. Fund newsrooms who are sharing trustworthy information. 3. Protect the messengers who are vulnerable to physical, digital, and legal threats. 4. Ensure newsrooms have the flexibility to adapt within an unpredictable political environment. The impact of Neo4js technology is even more tangible in the lead up to the US election, as showcased by the IDJC ElectionGraph where new hidden patterns of exploitative behaviour behind campaign ads across Meta's platforms are revealed.
"Social media scams that exploit heightened sentiments during important moments like elections have become widespread. The latest report from the IDJC ElectionGraph has revealed new hidden patterns of exploitative behavior behind election campaign ads proliferating across Meta’s platforms. This important research, enabled by Neo4j, can help voters and policymakers to distinguish legitimate actors from malicious ones hidden within complex networks. Without this technology, achieving such insights would be almost impossible."
