BRANCHING OUT: Did you know that we have partnered with environmental organisation Forest Carbon since 2020 and havw so far ‘captured’ a total of 439.1 tonnes of CO2, helping to plant approximately 1,756 trees? Carbon emissions produced by our waste collecting vehicles and employees’ journeys to and from work are off-set through the UK woodland carbon capture scheme. With four trees planted for every tonne of carbon emitted, our contribution from 108 tonnes of carbon footprint equates to approximately 432 trees planted every year. The project helps create new woodlands that benefit the country, the landscape and the global environment. We are supporting initiatives in Yorkshire, Northumberland, the Scottish Borders and Highlands, as well as internationally in Uruguay, Peru and Guatemala. Pauline Griggs, our Compliance Officer and ‘environmental ambassador’, said: “We care greatly about our environment and our actions as a business are formulated with that thought in mind. “We are particularly proud about our achievement in helping to plant a hectare of trees and, while continue to strive to reduce our overall emissions, we remain committed to supporting the work of Forest Carbon.” 🌲 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dKfKJmJd #trees #planting #carbonemissions #forest #woodland #global #initiatives #carbonfootprint

What if I told you that 90% of carbon credits and offsets are about as useful as a chocolate teapot? Wait? What? Aren’t they supposed to be a good thing for the planet? Well, firstly carbon credits are bought and sold on the carbon market. The price paid for the carbon credit is much higher than the amount the indigenous communities on the ground actually receive - you know...the ones protecting and growing the forests. And not sure about you? But I'm not all that down with the idea of ‘monetising’ and trading nature for a profit. Isn’t this all where the problem began? Secondly, as many as 90% of carbon offset projects have been reported to be worthless or having no positive impact on the planet. Not sure I'm comfortable with that either! In fact, Prof. Andrew Macintosh, (former head of Australia's Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee and an Environmental Law and Policy Professor at Australian National University), carried out a study into carbon credits. Only to discover that even though 8.2million carbon credits were sold across 59 projects, credits worth a whopping $100million I might add, those forests had actually decreased in size. Now, imagine if $100 million had gone into the right projects and the right communities for high-end conservation and reforestation? How different the planet would look now! Thirdly, I don’t believe in selling carbon credits so that companies can continue to pollute over here, whilst planting a few shiny new trees over there. I believe in REDUCE, REDUCE, REDUCE and then plant trees to restore. And thankfully, so do the businesses who we welcome at JUST ONE Tree as partners in our fight to save our planet. So where do I stand on carbon credits? I’d rather take the chocolate teapot please! Which is why we simply plant trees, grow forests and ensure that local communities are at the heart of our projects. No fuss, just effective reforestation. #carboncredits #greenbusiness #climateaction #reforestation #sustainablefuture
