The perpetual calendar function (showing days, months, and years), for instance, is set up to run without any correction for 400 years (traditional perpetuals need adjustments once a century, if you’re counting). But the accompanying moonphase indication goes somewhat bigger: It’s calculated to give an accurate representation of the moon’s waxing and waning for 45 million years, by which time it will have deviated by just one day. It was a balmy evening in August 2023.  For most of India, it would be a normal monsoon day. But for a few people in Bangalore, it was a nervous evening.  Hundreds of engineers and scientists at ISRO had gathered around the mission control facility. They are to witness a moment in history! ISRO’s Chandrayaan—3 Mission, which launched a few weeks earlier, was about to reach its final mission objective —to successfully soft-land on the South Pole of the Moon— a first for any country in the world! When the digital screens showed the 'Vikram' lander touch-down, a collective cheer erupted not only in ISRO but echoed across the country in bus terminals and train stations. You see, people like you and me understand the magnitude of this achievement, but interestingly millions who probably don't are still brimming with pride.
