Today, Childlight - Global Child Safety Institute launches the world's first global index on child sexual abuse and exploitation. Synthesising 88 sources and 125 studies with representative samples from 57 countries, our Index finds that: - 300 million children globally have been subject to online child sexual abuse, - 7.5% of Australian men have committed an online sexual offence against a child, and - Asia – specifically South Asia, and East Asia and Pacific regions – have the highest total number of child sexual abuse material reports globally. The Index highlights that prevalence measurement of online victimisation and offending is in its infancy, and there is a need for robust non-forensic, community-based prevalence studies of child sexual abuse. The Index is a major step forward in providing a global data baseline to assess the scale of the problem and the success of prevention measures, and will be iteratively expanded in the coming years. https://lnkd.in/g3QpJX3R

‘Around one in eight children around the world have been victims of non-consensual taking, sharing and exposure to sexual images and video in the past year – equating to more than 300 million children, new research by University of Edinburgh researchers suggests, in the first-ever global estimate of the scale of the crisis. The same number of children are estimated to have been subjected to sexting and unwanted sexual act requests by adults or other youths, according to the study, which draws on data from some 36 million reports to five major watchdogs and policing organisations globally’ At the Internet Watch Foundation we search the internet for child sexual abuse material (CSAM). 🚨EU leaders have failed to tackle child sexual abuse crisis online- meanwhile: three pieces of content shared online every second: 🚨 📵Conservative estimates say that almost 200 million pieces of content, images or videos, featuring a child being sexually abused, have been reported to be circulating widely on the internet .   🚨That’s three pieces of content shared online every second.  ⚠️Abuse has escalated to record levels, fueled by the ever-increasing presence of the internet in children’s lives. Through online networks and platforms, perpetrators have direct access to children, with the freedom to sexually exploit and extort them. Videos and pictures of children being sexually abused are easily accessed and shared.    🚨If EU leaders don’t listen to their constituents, the child sexual abuse crisis will continue to escalate. In the time it has taken for Europe’s current leadership to consider the current proposal, the fight against child sexual abuse has become even more complex.    ‼️A particular challenge is the rise of text-to-image based generative AI. The Internet Watch Foundation found 20,254 AI-generated images (👉🏻https://lnkd.in/eXHhiSX8 just one dark web forum devoted to child sexual abuse material in a single month. 🚸These technologies are further demonstration of why Europe needs to act now to prevent more children falling victim to abusers online.  🆕 Research which gathered insights from 500 children and 6,000 caregivers across the EU (see 👉🏻https://lnkd.in/eiHiz9nh) shows that children feel alone in ensuring their safety online. There is an alarming normalisation of these risks online – one child from the Netherlands said: “If you want to be safe online, you shouldn’t be on social media.”   📵It is unacceptable that children have been left to fend for themselves online. We must allow children to have their childhood free from coercive and manipulative abuse.   Many platforms have been using technologies for years that flag child sexual abuse material.An EU-wide law is essential to ensure that they are used by all companies consistently, which is why the Child Sexual Abuse Regulation was introduced two years ago.   See more here 👇🏻
