India deserves to be a sporting superpower! For those of us closely associated with sports, either at an individual or an organisational level, we would have debated this passionately at some point or another, possibly every time we see our medal tally at international events! So what’s holding us back? In my view, the biggest gap is sustained investments to build a professional sports ecosystem that nurtures talent in our country, across disciplines. While we have seen strong progress on this front in recent years in the form of programs like ‘Khelo India’, for the size and scale of our population, the gaps are too wide to be plugged by government interventions alone. More so because this is is not just about sporting laurels, it’s even more fundamental. It’s about not providing the productive outlets that all young people deserve to grow in self-esteem, and denying the especially talented ones the support and nurturing required to shine and thrive. In fact, it’s a well-established fact that sports training also nurtures soft skills - perseverance, teamwork, and leadership – that employers today seek in their workforce. Infosys Foundation has made this a priority and has been shaping some truly strategic partnerships over the years to promote all round sporting excellence, especially by supporting budding and talented youngsters with world class sporting facilities, including access to the very best in sports science for overall development. Partnerships like the one we have with the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy (PPBA) for the Champions Nurturing Program that has given the country some of its most promising future talent, is an example of the Foundation’s efforts in this space. A special focus must also be on supporting aspiring women athletes with a holistic ecosystem, which can help nurture their dreams.
