Hey everyone! Did you know that Saudi Arabia is making waves in sustainable construction? They've managed to achieve an impressive 24% reduction in emissions in their manufacturing and construction sectors. That's huge! Over the past decade, KSA has ranked 5th globally and 1st in the Middle East for reducing CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions. It's amazing to see such a strong commitment to a greener future. Meanwhile, the UAE has experienced an 18% increase in emissions from these sectors, showing that there's still a lot of work to be done. However, both countries are doing great in promoting green building practices. Saudi Arabia has 1,190 LEED-certified projects, and the UAE has 641, making them the only Middle Eastern nations in the top ten worldwide! Stonehaven's latest report highlights the rapid progress in sustainable construction in the Middle East, with both Saudi Arabia and the UAE leading the charge. The future looks bright with trends like Net Positive Buildings, zero-waste construction, and biophilic design gaining traction. Personally, I think it's inspiring to see these advancements. It makes me wonder how other regions can learn from the Middle East's progress in sustainable construction. What do you think about these trends? Do you believe your city or country is doing enough to promote green building practices?

Often asked what is sustainability in construction sector. Sustainability in construction refers to the practice of designing, building, and operating structures in a way that minimizes negative environmental impacts while maximizing economic and social benefits. It involves considering the entire life cycle of a building, from material extraction and construction to operation, maintenance, and eventual demolition or renovation. Key principles and practices of sustainability in construction include: Energy Efficiency: Designing buildings to minimize energy consumption through efficient insulation, lighting, heating, cooling, and use of renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power. Material Selection: Choosing environmentally friendly and sustainable materials, such as recycled or locally sourced materials, and minimizing the use of non-renewable resources like virgin timber or metals. Water Efficiency: Implementing water-saving technologies such as low-flow fixtures, rainwater harvesting systems, and greywater recycling to reduce water consumption in buildings. Waste Reduction: Minimizing construction waste through careful planning, material optimization, and recycling or reusing materials whenever possible. Green Building Certifications: Seeking certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) to demonstrate compliance with sustainability standards and best practices. Sustainable Site Development: Designing buildings and landscapes to minimize disruption to natural ecosystems, preserve biodiversity, and promote the health of surrounding communities. Indoor Environmental Quality: Ensuring healthy and comfortable indoor environments through proper ventilation, natural daylighting, and the use of non-toxic building materials to enhance occupant well-being. Adaptability and Resilience: Designing buildings that are adaptable to changing needs and resilient to environmental risks such as extreme weather events or climate change impacts. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): Conducting life cycle assessments to evaluate the environmental impacts of buildings and inform design decisions for minimizing overall environmental footprint. Stakeholder Engagement: Engaging with stakeholders including clients, architects, engineers, contractors, and local communities to incorporate diverse perspectives and priorities into sustainable construction projects. By integrating these principles and practices into the construction process, sustainable buildings can contribute to a healthier environment, lower operating costs, improved occupant comfort and productivity, and enhanced long-term value for both owners and communities. 1.25 trillion USD - that's the headline figure for me! In a post yesterday I promised to follow up today with more information around the Vision 2030 progress in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is reason for optimism. Knight Frank said in its Construction Landscape Review—H1 2024 report that since the introduction of Vision 2030 in 2016, Saudi Arabia has launched projects worth more than 1.25 trillion USD. It also mentioned that the construction output was 142 billion USD last year, and is expected to hit 182 billion USD in 2028, which would then make it the world's largest construction market. When you drive around Riyadh, and see all the cranes up (e.g. Diriyah Company l شركة الدرعية or King Salman Park Foundation or Riyadh Expo 2030), this is easy to believe! #ksabusiness #construction #vision2030 https://lnkd.in/eXVwsHPW
Saudi Arabia’s construction output value to hit $181.5bn by 2028, Knight Frank says

Saudi Arabia is preparing to begin construction work on the cube-shaped skyscraper big enough to fit 20 Empire State Buildings THE MUKAAB will be 400-meters on each side when construction is finished, which would make it the largest built structure in the world. “It’s masquerading as a building today but it’s so much more,” Michael Dyke, chief executive officer of New Murabba, said: “Ultimately, a capital city the size of Riyadh deserves to have a global, central icon as other capital cities do.” Already, New Murabba Development Co. has excavated more than 10 million cubic meters out of the ground to prepare for the Mukaab’s construction. The developer is planning to award contracts worth tens of billions of riyals in the coming year, Dyke said As the development opens, New Murabba will likely face competition from the kingdom’s other projects. Saudi Arabia is set to become the world’s biggest construction market as it barrels toward 2030, when it hopes the majority of its developments will be completed. Saudi Arabia has launched $1.3 trillion in real estate and infrastructure projects to diversify the economy away from oil and become a more attractive place. From 25th to 27th October 2024, the highly anticipated Red Sea Week, the most important yachting event in the MIDDLE EAST, will host the grand opening of Sindalah Island IN NEOM.
