Some of their names may still be familiar, but how many of us could say much about the majority of the late 18th and early 19th century captains, generals and admirals commemorated in the neo-Classical monuments of St. Paul’s? At best, perhaps, their names recall the battles on the Continent, or off its shores, in which some of them fell. And as the national story in which their names featured fades, its obverse emerges – a history of oppression, enslavement, resistance and liberation. “War and resistance in the Caribbean : Monuments in St. Paul’s Cathedral” is the second trail which St. Paul’s has created to represent some of these monuments in the context of the mercantile and imperial history associated with their subjects. It is the fruit of a collaboration with SV2G – St. Vincent and the Grenadines 2nd Generation, an African and Caribbean arts and heritage organisation. The result is a thoughtful and rich exploration of the experience of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars in the Caribbean, in which the engagement of those commemorated in the cathedral is set beside the experience of the indigenous and African people of the Lesser Antilles or the Windward Isles. The interpretation through nine monuments – provided in both written and oral forms – presents an appallingly violent passage of history in a way suggestive of its complexity, while leaving its audience to draw their own conclusions. In doing so, it extends the collaboration from 2V2G and St. Paul’s to encompass all those who follow the trail. “War and resistance in the Caribbean” is the successor to “The East India Company at St. Paul’s”, another trail, produced in collaboration with the Stepney Community Trust, which provides support especially to the Bangladeshi community in East London. Together, these trails prompt a conversation between the present and the past and reflection for us today, which should serve to advance the organisers’ objective “to understand shared pasts in order to shape our shared future”. They deserve a wide audience. https://lnkd.in/eNPpxtij https://lnkd.in/eSPPKaHA

BLOG POST= The PINES OF ROME The alluring, evocative and omnipresent, pine trees of Rome, have an ancient history and are a symbol of Rome for me. Upon descent to Rome, their majesty and grace seems to offer the first glorious greeting to his visitors. There are estimates that 60,000 pine trees are present in Rome alone. Did you know that there is an area of Rome is called “Pigneto” because of the abundance of these trees? So, how and when did these regal and majestic trees arrive in Rome ? and who planted them?

Thank you to everyone attending for an intense, confronting and deep AMA with Peter Koenig yesterday. During the AMA we covered... 🤔 Did Peter find a start of peace during the summit in Japan? 🤔 What shifts if we understand peace as our natural state. Therefore it is not about creating peace but rather returning to peace. 🤔 A vicious circle in which avoiding conflict leads to lies, which lead to unclarity, which leads to confusion for others, which creates conflict. 🤔 What to do if you as source are not clear yet? 🤔 The Japanese concept of 'Ma' and the role of liminal spaces. 🤔 Whether Peter actually left his own field. 🤔 Why we all need to reclaim our capacity for violence and the polarity of peace. Watch below. To access the library of past AMAs, join our free Conscious Tribes Community: https://lnkd.in/dxK3T7Gi #ama #source #war #peace
