“In the Constitutional Monarchy. In Spain, when speaking
of terrorists, they are called RADICAL... NO, they are not radicals: they are terrorists.
-RADICAL is the one who goes to the RAIZ in its investigations,
-TO THE CAUSES OF PROBLEMS, of a society, economy-
….I am Valencian, but just as Spanish,
equally European, equally IBERO-AMERICAN,
VALENCIANS we are very lovers,
-of the orange trees, the orchard, the sea, we live in front of the Mediterranean Sea-
Everyone fits here,…
We speak in EL: LANGUAGE YOU WANT…
-
Spain is a social and democratic state of law…
=
The figure of the King gives stability,
CONTINUITY, it is a: constitutional democracy…
-DIRECT DEMOCRACY OR RADICAL DEMOCRACY IS IMPOSSIBLE, at least I
I believe her. Representative Democracy is possible-
THE HUMAN PERSON is the key to all societies

Lots of discussion in the kidlit community about the growing trend of big publishers bringing out children's books written by celebrity authors and what this means for other authors (potentially: less opportunities due to higher advances and a bigger slice of the marketing budget for celebrities) and readers (potential book quality issues). Also...I don't think celebrity authors are submitting via the slush pile ;)
But it also raises other questions, including how the book by celebrity author Jamie Oliver got through the entire editing and publishing process without someone picking up the issues around the representation of the Indigenous character in the book. The book has now been withdrawn from sale. (link to The Guardian article in the comments).
The Australian Society of Authors (ASA) released the following statement:
'The ASA considers it essential that writers and illustrators should not only familiarise themselves with Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP), but also the appropriate protocols, in order to ensure they are engaging in respectful storytelling practices.'
The ASA has a free guide for members prepared by Terri Janke, specifically addressing the protocols for the literary sector, and consultation and consent for every stage of the book writing process. You can find 'More Than Words' here (approx pg 4): https://lnkd.in/gYPAWTEM
It's a great guide and highly recommend it. ArtsHub and Creative Victoria also ran a great workshop titled: 'Working with First Peoples – a creative industries overview' that was brilliant - again, based on the work of Terri Janke.
So, please, it's time to put some effort into understanding Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, aka ICIP - and there are plenty of resources out there to help you do so.
Understanding - let alone negotiating - your publishing contract can be daunting. The terms you agree to will have a substantial impact on your rights and potential future earnings.
If you'd like to learn more about what to look out for in a publishing contract, see our resource, Understanding and Negotiating Your Publishing Contract. The resource features a document listing our top recommendations your publishing agreement and a recording of a webinar with Authors Legal Managing Lawyer and Director, Victoria Chylek.

I know… Speaking English and enjoying wine may seem totally unrelated at first, but they do share some interesting parallels.
📌
English and wine are both wonderfully diverse. Just like there are various accents and dialects in English, there's a wide range of flavors to discover in the world of wine.
📌📌
English is often a vehicle for communication and cultural exchange, promoting social interactions. Similarly, wine often brings people together at gatherings, creating opportunities for bonding and connection.
📌📌📌
In both English and wine, there's a never-ending journey of learning and exploration.
So, which one do you have a passion for? Or both? :)

I have recently become a member of the Edmonton Alliance Francaise.
I have studied French for 8 years and my recent trip to QC has rekindled my interest in speaking it.
Back in the day we did not appreciate the lessons and we found them a bit boring (and French grammar was something else!) - French used to be THE language of 19th century Europe and my generation was crazy to learn English which we were equating to Western civilization and modernity.
