BUILDING CONNECTION IN A LONELIER WORLD Our latest research dives deep into the intersection of loneliness & culture: how it's reshaping human behaviour, springs from the disruption of traditional community structures and creates opportunities for governments, brands & businesses to step up - not with token gestures, but with meaningful, human connection. Fantastic work from our CultureLab team at Bricolage #Loneliness #CulturalInsights #Leadership
The big question for 2025: how can we bring people together? ✍ The Culture Lab team at Bricolage has been diving headfirst into one of the most important cultural stories of our time: loneliness. 📰 In 2022, Ireland topped the European Quality of Life Survey for Loneliness. But it’s not just an Irish problem.. 🌍 This year saw US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy equate the 'Loneliness Epidemic' to tobacco use, with human connection as the only remedy. 🔍 We spoke to top minds in psychology, community, and cultural strategy and ran focus groups with people aged 20 to 70 across Ireland to get to the heart of loneliness. In the report, we explore how Ireland - historically known for its communal spirit - got here. We also explore how brands - through the simple act of bringing people together - can have a role in this space. 📨 Contact us at culturelab@bricolage.ie or comment below for the full report!

Culture and Arts continues to play a vital role in supporting the whole system to look beyond traditional service delivery for improving health and wellbeing. Being able to lean into the social interventions that come with embracing the arts, can support a more holistic approach in improving outcomes. The #HealingArtsScotland collaboration brought to life the tangible impact being made by this sector and by embracing this into healthcare delivery brings further to life the vision set out by Scotlands Chief Medical Officer Sir Gregor Smith, in the importance of how we better understand the interconnectedness of “biology and biography”. Public Health Scotland continues to play a vital role in diversifying the approach in supporting the nation to reduce #healthinequalities and improve healthy life years. Learning through global partnerships to support local service planning and targeted early interventions. “Together, through cross-sector collaborations, supporting communities #thrive”. Colleagues across Public Health Scotland are working hard to explore ways to integrate partnership working across this arena by sharing #data, #insight, #evidence and #reserach for more targeted inventions in local systems. #WholeSystemsApproach #PublicHealth #CultureandArts #SocialPrescribing #PartnershipWorking World Health Organization Catherine Cassidy-Dedics Lisa Sinclair Nancy Riach Mike Winter Siobhan McConnachie Safia Qureshi Kim Simpson Frances Elliot Paul Nelson Emma Dixon
Health and wellbeing go far beyond being treated in hospitals and is intricately linked to every part of our daily lives, including culture and the arts. Yesterday, we were honoured to have Christopher Bailey, Arts and Health lead at the World Health Organization (WHO), visit our Edinburgh office to speak to PHS colleagues about the important role that the arts can play in healing and how this can be applied to the development of our new strategy. This all-staff session builds on our recent contribution to the @Healing Arts Scotland Festival held in August last year, a nation-wide festival which celebrated and advocated for improved physical, mental and social health through the arts. Following the session, both Christopher and Angiolina Foster, PHS Chair, spoke at the Scottish Parliament, where they shared how the learnings from the festival can be taken into Scotland's health and care system. What an inspirational panel led by strong female change-makers! While conversations about indigenous rights and climate justice are for everyone, as an engineer I especially draw motivation from discussions on the nexus of climate change, resilience, and global development. … My big takeaways… 1. The construction industry needs to be engaging with the local communities in our development projects. Their role is more than providing a signature on a form, they need to be engaged as key stakeholders and involved throughout the process. Listen to their desires and values. 2. Don’t just rebuild, rebuild better. Learn from our engineering pitfalls, and built back infrastructure to a higher level of resilience. With resilient structure there is often a higher embodied carbon cost, we must find the balance between material intensity and engineering to “future proof” our hazard prone communities. Global warming is increasing the recurrence and intensity of many extreme weather events, how can we engineer to meet future demands? 3. Every new infrastructure project can be a green-infrastructure project. Can we build in a way that enhances the community experience and rather than building to meet a need? Are there opportunities to promote low carbon transit, implement solar, reduce heat-island effect, or cultivate community? … Thanks Oxfam Aotearoa
