Terrific write-up by Julia King at Fierce Telecom of the American Association for Public Broadband & the Benton Institute for Broadband & Society's guide to building a public broadband network: "Own Your Internet: How to Build a Public Broadband Network." One of the best compliments I've gotten about the guide is how it is written in terms simple enough for a non-expert to understand, which was the entire point! Very excited to see it making the rounds! https://lnkd.in/eCsPmKtB

1.2m homes have potentially gone WITHOUT fibre broadband because of overbuild. 🏡 A foolhardy waste of resources. Why would you elect to do this rather than servicing homes and areas without full fibre broadband... choice I hear you say? 🗣 Nope, with a Pulse Fibre open network, we allow any ISP to use our infrastructure. It's time to move on from old fashioned connectivity. ⚡ #fullfibre #developments #builtenvionrment
Did you know that there are over 635k homes in the UK that Openreach, CityFibre and Virgin Media have over built each other?

Some people will say this over build provides consumers choice BUT what about the millions of homes that still do not have a full fibre service ..... all that opportunity has been missed as resources have been deployed to over build other networks! Also it looks like Openreach could be targeting CityFibre as up to 25% of the CityFibre RfS network looks to have an Openreach full fibre service. One key observation from this is that I am surprised that the infrastructure investors at the top of the tree are signing off such over build when there are still millions of homes available for 'first mover advantage'. BTW great work by the Infranomics team here highlighting what is actually happening. I hope that Building Digital UK (BDUK) and Ofcom are looking at the power of data in helping identify what has really been built, where to encourage commercial investors to build and also what needs to be classified as intervention areas. Also are Investors looking at tools like this to give them insight on where their investments are being deployed. Adding the current 'street works data' will give a very interesting forward looking view.

The “digital divide” is a mostly invisible line between those who have meaningful access to digital technology and those who don’t. Call it perhaps “the other side of the digital tracks”. Just because access to the internet is available to many underprivileged people – on the phone, at home, at school or the local public library – does not mean they actually make full use of the digital technology to empower themselves and make their lives better. In this blog post, I explain a bit about how Relavanti can help in erasing the digital divide in Milwaukee's low and moderate income neighborhoods.
