Over the past decade there seems to be a trend I’ve noticed when it comes to recruiting new technicians into the auto and diesel industry. That specific trend is that it’s a requirement to be a software engineer and an electronic genius to do this job. Make no mistake. The modern automobile and diesel truck have advanced in strides with technology over the past 25 years. Gaining a strong understanding of electronics and computerization is definitely important. But it’s NOT the entirety of the job. There is still PLENTY of mechanical repairs that need to be done everyday, there are also still young people eager to work with their hands. We’d be wise to not push them away from this career field. There’s plenty of time to develop strong electrical repair and diagnostic skills during the journey of becoming an experienced and qualified technician. As today’s technician’s are only aging and young techs becoming more difficult to recruit into the industry.
