Fantasy Landscape - (2024) A landscape drawing that I finished yesterday! I originally intended for it to be in color, but I opted for another grayscale drawing to further practice my values. Landscape drawing created by myself (Cazzie Stark) from start to finish via Procreate. ---- #visdevartist #environmentalart #fantasyart #shading #lighting #2Dartist #digitalart #openforwork

Preservation of relics and historical landmarks is a “devil and the deep blue sea” scenario for everyone. #collectivememory #communalmemory 🌳Nature vs Nurture🥰 Changing the Past Erosion, due to weathering, war, or vandalism results in a great fear of losing the past. But every act of erosion and every effort at preservation alters the past as it was. What we are left with is not always how it was in reality. The painting above is by Irish artist George Petrie. The Last Circuit of Pilgrims at Clonmacnoise, County Offaly, and it now belongs to The National Gallery of Ireland. The painting itself dates between 1843-1846. According to David Lowenthal, author of The Past is a Forgotten Country, Petrie embellished the Irish landscape in this painting in fear that some of the structures might not exist in the future- an act of preservation through painting the landscape. But did he paint the landscape as it was in reality? “To enhance the effect of ‘several monuments characteristic of the past history of our country, and which will soon cease to exist,’ Petrie, according to Lowenthal, “depicted a round tower, a Celtic Cross, and a half ruined Hibernian Romanesque church in contrived juxtaposition.” Is this a case of art imitating life, or vice versa? Does it really matter in the long run? What if we let erosion do its work? Will all ruins and natural relics disappear? If left to its own natural forces of erosive destruction, Niagara’s Horseshoe Falls would look more like Niagara Glen in 50,000 years. Is that ok, or should we intervene? Is the past worth saving, and at what price? Given the media coverage and public outrage over the deliberate vandalism of the Sycamore Gap Tree in September 2023, most people want to preserve the past. Ivy covered walls that might do structural damage to a building is part of the past. Should that not be removed? What if it halts progress? Preservation of the past means preservation of our collective memories, too. But the act of preservation can be destructive, and so can doing nothing. If ever there was a Devil and the deep blue sea situation in collective memory and historical preservation, this it, #collectivememory Photo of Clonmacnoise by Ingo Mehling

Spruce Tree House in Mesa Verde National Park is one of those magical places that quietly boasts its historical grandeur. Located within Colorado's vast landscapes, Spruce Tree House is the third largest cliff dwelling in Mesa Verde National Park. It's a marvel, with about 130 rooms and 8 kivas, which are ceremonial structures. These ancient rooms, once bustling with life, date back to the 1200s, built by the ancestral Puebloans. Imagine, centuries ago, this place was a thriving community, a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of its builders. The beauty of the Spruce Tree House is something that genuinely captivates the soul. As a photographer, I've had the privilege of witnessing many splendid sights, but this one, it's different. It’s as if the very stones whisper tales of the past. The way the sunlight dances through the canyon, casting shadows that play along the ancient walls, it’s like watching a delicate ballet of light and time. Each room, each crack in the wall holds a story, a fragment of a life once lived with such vigor. What's truly awe-inspiring is how the structure blends seamlessly with the natural alcove it occupies. It's a symbiotic relationship between nature and human craftsmanship. The alcove provided shelter, protection, and a vantage point that must have been crucial for the inhabitants. And in return, they honored this gift of nature by creating a structure that complements its surroundings rather than overpowering it. The Spruce Tree House, with its silent walls and empty kivas, still stands strong, resilient against the test of time. It's a monument not just to the past but to the enduring spirit of humanity's desire to harmonize with nature. Each stone, meticulously placed by hands long gone, tells a story of survival, community, and the timeless dialogue between humans and their environment. Title: Elephant: Then and Now This Gond artwork depicts the noble elephant, not just a magnificent creature, but an architect of the forest. Their powerful strides create pathways that other species use, fostering a thriving ecosystem. Sadly, these gentle giants face extinction due to poaching. Title: Garuna: A Story of Plight This Gond artwork serves as a powerful call to action, urging us to recognize the vital role vultures play and advocate for their protection. These majestic birds, once revered as silent guardians of our environment, now face a perilous plight. Title: Sparrow: Then, Now, and Its Future This Gond artwork, bursting with color, presents a stark contrast to its subject. House sparrows, once cherished companions in our cities, played a vital role. However, changing cityscapes and the use of harsh chemicals threaten their very existence. The artwork serves as a poignant reminder – a silent melody where a lively chorus once thrived. These unique artworks are beautiful portrayals wrapped in the message of urgency, reminding us of the delicate balance of our ecosystem.
