Let me re-introduce you to someone you already know... THE SWAG HOUND - PROMO PROSPECTOR! Some say Swag. Others say Schwag. But he calls it FREE! You know him because he’s been at every show since 1989. He’s a Promo Prospector searching for gold in the form of free promotional giveaways that are the bread and butter of every brand’s trade event repertoire. He surveys the floor plans looking for promising indicators such as porous and permeable structures or faults and anomalies in the layout. Once in the convention center, he turns to identifying surface features, such as loose reception protocol, or the presence of baskets, piles, and low-hanging, shiny objects. In outdoor-centric shows, fossils can typically be found near the tchotchkes. While the Swag Hound mostly operates in secret, he’s adept at feigning interest in your brand or product. Often under the cover of a fake or discarded retailer badge, he will nod and agree to just about anything if it means another mousepad, water bottle, koozie, or keychain. Last week I posted an article about the huge revenue stats of corporate swag. It made me remember the little nugget seen in this photo. It's a 1980s promo pin my dad had kept from his years in realestate. I kept it because I found it so ridiculous. Maybe I'm just naughty, but my creative brain goes to all kinds of follow ups to what "I" might be ready for. This is great example of a brand not able to see past what they thought was clever. I went to my first art market this year. And I was a vendor. I applied on a whim thinking nothing would happen. Two months later, I’m in a black, corset dress painting outside a renaissance-style tent, melting in 90 degree weather. A fellow vendor told me this was her second art market of the week. She had done 36 that year alone. She explained this was a small market. Small city. Only one day long. Not likely to break $1000 in profits. At the end she had made over $900. I was surprised to see my booth had made over $1,500. In terms of “big money” that might not sound like a lot. But for a couple rookie artists sitting out in the hot sun for a few hours, that was a huge win. I don’t think our merch was better than this fellow vendor’s, nor was our layout more enticing. I think we simply excelled at hooking attendees. We had a dice tower at the entrance of the booth that attendees could use to roll a DnD 20-sided dice to score discounts. If they rolled a 1, they would have to push “the button of shame” (a large red button we recorded to “boo” at the unfortunate roller). As crowds gathered around the tower, onlookers were encouraged to enter the booth, not wanting to miss the action. Apart from the tower, we extended compliments and invitations to humanize ourselves and make attendees comfortable without pressure of buying (spoiler alert, if they entered the booth, they often bought). There were so many people who hesitated at the entrance or who walked by very slowly, staring at our merchandise. When we tried to feign indifference, they walked on. When we greeted them, extended a compliment, or invited them to “come and enjoy the ambiance,” they would typically smile and enter the booth. I can’t tell you how many of these people ended up buying when they would have just walked by. Whether your business is large or small, people want to buy from other people. Not “sales” people. Relatable people. That’s a lesson I frequently need to relearn and a principle I will definitely be applying to future events. How much do you think about the little things? Even if you are a big picture kinda person, remember that the devil is in the details. What might seem insignificant to you may be a dealbreaker for your customer. If you print one shade off, to you it may not be a big deal. To your client it can be their brand identity.
