I am happy to announce that I have successfully completed the NIeCer 103: Scientific Writing in Health Research course! I learned how to write interesting and concise research papers through this programme. 🎯 Here are some of the main findings that I found to strengthen my future: 🧱 Creating a basic foundation: It covered how to create an argument matrix and a background section that is short and sweet. which helps introduce your study of research by situating it in context and highlighting its significance. 💻 Mastering reference Management system: Zotero a reference management software, & this portion included an important training on how to gather references accurately through the use of Zotero and the correct way to do intext citations. 📊 Writing the Methods & Results: Writing a structured methods section that would make research transparent and replicable. This course also taught how I can present the results in a proper manner with tables and graphs and how to make it look informative that can be understood without too much explanation. ✍🏻 Great Discussion & Wielding the Abstract: ️ A short but powerful discussion section which interprets how your results have broader implications. The course also highlighted the value of writing an abstract and title, and choosing good keywords to attract readers. 🔍 Scientific Style & Journal Selection: Practicing to improve clarity, conciseness, and objectivity in scientific writing was another important key element which I found from this course. I also learned how to select the most suitable journal to submit a manuscript considering the research focus, the audience, and impact of the publication. I've recently been diving into the art of grant writing as part of my PhD modules. As an early career researcher, developing this skill is absolutely crucial, and I'm excited to be enhancing my abilities in this area. As Robert Porter (2007) noted, many academics or clinicians with impressive publishing records often struggle with writing effective grant proposals. The transition from academic manuscripts to compelling, persuasive grant writing can be quite challenging, as it requires a different set of skills. Grants constitute the primary impetus for scientific research. For a researcher, the ability to secure grants means being able to transform ideas into impactful projects, fund your own team, and ultimately, expand the frontiers of knowledge. One question we should always ask ourselves while writing a grant proposal is, Why should they fund your project? Sometimes, grants undergo lobbying, and you may not be successful on the first attempt. But if you have given your blood and sweat to the proposal, thinking rationally and altruistically, keep moving forward. Try for some non-competitive grants or explore another funding scheme. The main thing is to have faith in your proposal—that it deserves to roll out, that it will create value in the field, and that it will benefit patients, particularly in medical research. If you believe in the why of your proposal and know how to make that compelling pitch to the funder, your proposal will be successfully funded someday. Grant writing isn’t just a skill—it’s a necessity. The different types of abstracts are used in various contexts to serve specific purposes; 🛑 Descriptive Abstracts - These are useful when you need to provide a quick overview without getting into detailed findings. They are often used in library catalogs, conference programs where the abstract serves as a brief introduction and preliminary proposals where detailed results are not yet available. 🛑 Informative Abstracts - Ideal for academic journal articles and full research papers where a comprehensive summary is needed. They are typically used in peer reviewed journal articles, research reports and theses and detailed conference proceedings. 🛑 Structured Abstracts - Commonly used in scientific and medical research where clarity and organization are crucial. They are often seen in medical and clinical research articles, scientific journals that require a standardized format and research databases where structured information improves searchability. 🛑 Critical Abstracts - Suitable for reviews and assessments of research where an evaluation of the study is needed. They are used in literature reviews and meta-analyses, academic critiques and commentaries and research reports where the assessment of methodology and results is important. 🛑 Highlight Abstracts - These are used to capture attention and highlight the most interesting aspects of the research, often without providing full details.
