Creating content about the automotive industry can be an opportunity, but the premise on which much of that content is being created is deeply concerning.
𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬:
- Small Facilities Closing: More small automotive facilities are shutting down because they can't find the right help.
- Dealership Technicians Leaving: Many dealer techs are leaving their well-paying jobs for various reasons and not joining the aftermarket.
- Technicians Leaving the Repair Side: Non-dealer techs are also leaving the repair side of the industry in search of better opportunities. When they don't find them within automotive, other industries that require basic tools are eagerly hiring them. They offer respectable salaries, benefits, and sometimes even a car with a gas card.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
This situation is setting the stage for major disruption. Training enough robots to fix cars isn't a feasible solution. Automotive repair involves much more than just draining oil and torquing tires. The complexity and variety of tasks require skilled human technicians.
As the industry faces these challenges, it's clear that significant changes are needed to attract and retain talent. Without addressing these issues, the future of automotive repair and maintenance looks uncertain and quite honestly... bleak. But I can fix my car. Can you fix yours?
