In 2024, Teachers Assistant AI has conducted interviews with a range of college staff and administrators to gain insights and perspectives on the data. AI has the potential to personalise learning, providing support tailored to each student's journey, wherever they may be. How might AI make an impact on this data? California Governor Gavin Newsom just vetoed SB 1047, the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act. I won't weigh in on its pros and cons and you can read his rationale in the letter. What I will highlight are some AI bills he did sign. AB 2876 requires the Instructional Quality Commission to consider incorporating AI literacy content into the mathematics, science, and history-social science curriculum frameworks and instructional materials when those content areas are next up for revision. It was sponsored by Marc Berman and Dawn Addis. SB 1288 convenes a working group to develop guidance for school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools on the safe use of artificial intelligence in education. It was sponsored by Josh Becker, Al Muratsuchi, Bill Dodd, and Marc Berman. My theory of change is that when our nation's students build AI literacy, we will have citizens who know how AI works, its technical foundation, societal impacts, and ethical challenges so that they can use and create with AI safely, effectively, and responsibly. So while state and federal legislators, associations, researchers, and companies debate safety and innovation issues, there is a whole host of AI in education policy ideas that are uncontroversial and need attention as well. Among the interesting discussions taking place on day 1 at EDTECH WEEK sponsored by Teachers College, Columbia University, was a panel hosted by Catherine Cushenberry of The Disagreement and featuring Benjamin Riley and Alex Kotran. In a wide ranging and fascinating debate, the panelists explored the future of AI in K-12 education. The discussion touched upon the lack of empirical evidence showing a positive impact upon student learning outcomes; and they also discussed whether the technology was just too early to be incorporated into schools when LLMs are shown to be right just 80% of the time. Concluding by summarising the opposing views through the Steelman argument (a rhetorical device that creates the opponents strongest case), they concluded that with accelerating adoption rates and a belief that this could be “bigger than the computer”, we need to understand it better. They acknowledged, however, that even though we are moving so fast, we shouldn’t dismiss discussions around the “should” of the technology, while being overly focused on the “how”. #edtech #ai
