🌟"What's the SCoPE?"🌟 ⚡️We have officially hit 'SCoPE' season at RLHS! Student Counselor Parent Engagement meetings are the key building blocks of our Academic and Career Planning program at the high school level.⚡️ 🏆For the first four months of the school year, we meet with each student at every grade level starting with the 12th graders. Parents are highly encouraged to attend these meetings with their student.🏆 🧩Data collected from individual ACP meetings in 8th grade ignites the process. From there, the development of an individualized 4-YEAR plan in high school through yearly SCoPE meetings defines the pathway, and prepares our young adults for their post-secondary plans. High schoolers are provided the tools to KNOW (9th), EXPLORE (10th), PLAN (11th), and GO (12th).🧩 ♟️Over the course of 4 years of SCoPE meetings, elective course recommendations, youth apprenticeship opportunities, FAFSA + scholarship information, and job shadow options are just a few of the things we share with families to assure each student is provided with the #RLAdvantage prior to graduation.♟️ 👍See you at your SCoPE meeting!👍 #SchoolCounselor #AcademicCareerPlanning #Relationships #Pathways #Goals

I feel like there are 2 significant barriers to making opportunities like this a reality for all secondary students. First, the inflexibility in the traditional school schedule. Second, the limited number of “champions” (and funding them) in schools and districts that connect with students and help them understand the options available to them through CTE/CTSOs, concurrent enrollment, job shadows, apprenticeships, etc. Let’s be brutally honest here: teachers, administrators, and school counselors do NOT have time to add this to their already full plates! I hope findings like this from Education Week influence even more change so students can see the multiple paths to their future and be motivated and inspired to reengage in school. https://lnkd.in/gBCG8ZSU

At Winning Futures, Kristina Marshall, M. Ed. and I are huge advocates for standardizing the term college to include all credentialed/certificate post-secondary pathways. By including trade schools and apprenticeships into the standard post secondary planning conversations as viable options. Students will be better informed to make decisions that fit their skill set and passion, increasing their potential for success. Here's a quick guide to help better prepare students as their move toward their high school graduation. https://lnkd.in/esc7bEqB

The reality: It can cost a lot to become a teacher. But also reality, teacher prep programs, like teacher residencies and apprenticeships, work hard to eliminate financial barriers to allow aspiring educators to earn while they learn, achieve their goals of becoming a teacher of record, and enter the profession. Teacher residencies and apprenticeships both have an unwavering commitment to support the recruitment and preparation of aspiring educators. Read: bit.ly/4hraZhP

We're seeing a major shift toward promoting CTE and career-connected learning in secondary education here in Maryland, and I find it so interesting when I compare it to my own high school experience (class of '08). The goal: "at least 45% of high school students to complete a high-school level registered apprenticeship program or industry-recognized credential by the 2030-31 school year" Just under 7% of MD students obtained an industry-recognized credential in 2023. I wonder which industry certifications I might've pursued had there not been such an either/or approach to CTE when I was in school. (Either college or career prep) 🤔 I'm a fan of the "and" mentality. https://lnkd.in/dHCJ8jq6

🚨 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐎𝐖! 🚨 Back in 2015, the first signs of a shift—Gen Z questioning whether college was the inevitable next step. Fast forward to today, and the challenges facing our high schools are even more urgent. 𝟑𝟏% 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔.𝐒. Interesting article on this lovely crisp Wednesday morning, https://lnkd.in/g4g5jygh Sixty-eight percent of high-school respondents say they’ve heard “a lot” about college. By comparison, just 23% of high-schoolers say they’ve heard “a lot” about apprenticeships, certificates and vocational programs. And only 19% say they hear a lot about jobs that don’t require college. At RCS we will continue to share all the opportunities for success after high school.

We’re facing a crisis in how we prepare our youth for the future. 🚨 Students today are feeling more disconnected from school than ever before. A recent survey shows a significant drop in school engagement among middle and high schoolers, especially for those who don't see college in their future. 📉 This disinterest isn't just about disliking homework or classes. It’s about a system that seems to only speak to those on a college-bound path, leaving others feeling unseen and unchallenged. 🚫🎓 When nearly half of these students feel their schoolwork doesn’t challenge them in a positive way, we’re not just facing an engagement problem— Here’s the reality: Not every student is aiming for a four-year college, and that's okay. But when schools focus predominantly on college, we risk alienating those who might excel in other pathways like apprenticeships, vocational training, or entrepreneurship. It’s time we broaden the conversation. Schools need to introduce a wider array of options, showing students that their future can be bright and fulfilling, whether they choose college or another path. 🌟 Every student deserves to feel excited about their future. In this month's moment with Dr. Calvin E. Moore, Jr., our CEO highlights the growing role of apprenticeship programs in early childhood education as a pathway to success for educators. These programs, often paired with the CDA Credential, provide hands-on training and classroom instruction, helping teachers advance their careers while addressing the child care shortage.
