#COP29 in Baku: A Milestone on the Arc of Transition? From Impact Maximization to Global Transformation For the Future Economy Forum the past Conferences of the Parties (COPs) have been about maximizing impact within the existing system. Even though I continue to struggle with this, I believe that the concrete outcomes achieved at these gatherings in the end justify the carbon burned to get me here and the midnight oil burned to get to the outcomes. In Sharm El-Sheikh, our collaboration with SEKEM Group focused on promoting biodynamic farming and creating whole-system carbon credits. Building on this success, we are now working to integrate this approach into the global transition from chemical-based farming to natural farming through the Economy of Love global initiative (EoL Global). In Dubai, our partnership with Vijay Kumar from the Andhra Pradesh Community-managed Natural Farming (APCNF) initiative led to the establishment of Natural Farming Global, an initiative with the potential to transition millions of smallholder farmers to regenerative practices by 2025. COP29: Finance, Article 6, and 1.5-degree Aligned NDCs At COP29, with its focus on finance, Article 6, and 1.5-degree aligned Nationally Determined Contributions (#NDCs), we continue our work with partners from Kenya, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India, Egypt, the UAE, and many more. Tipping Point and Regenerative Future While much work remains, there is a sense that a tipping point is near. We view COP29 as a critical milestone on the path to a regenerative future, leading through the #UNCCD #COP16 in #Riyadh and towards #COP30 in #Belem. Our aim is to showcase tangible results in Belem, demonstrating that it is not just a starting point but a crucial marker on the journey to a sustainable world. Farming with Nature: Better for People, Planet, and Business Our goal with EoL Global, Natural Farming Global, and all our partners is to arrive in Brazil with a diverse range of success stories spanning various climatic conditions, soil types, cultural realities, and economic realities. We aim to demonstrate that farming with nature is simply better for people, planet, and business. COP29 represents a pivotal moment in the global transition towards a sustainable future. By showcasing the benefits of natural farming and regenerative practices, we can inspire action and drive meaningful change on a global scale. #FutureEconomyForum #ActionOnFoodHub #COP29 #UNFCCC #ClimateChange #OceansPavilion #BakuCOP #RioConventions #RegenerativeValueCreation #NOWPartners Greenhouse Communications #GreenHouseCummunications Aya Okawa #UNCCD #UNCBD #NOWPartnersFoundation #RegenerativeAgriculture #Regeneration #AgroEcology #ClimateFinance Hunter Lovins

On my way to COP28 UAE to champion the COP28 action agenda for regenerative landscapes. It’s promising to see #food on the agenda as a problem and solution. Let’s take action together. Some great initiatives - now we have to act fast! 1. The action plans brings together >25 countries to transition >160 million hectares to implement regenerative agriculture principles in partnership with close to 400 million farmers by 2030. 2. More than 136 countries - including US, Brazil, China - have signed the declaration to move to Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action. These countries are covering 70% of the world’s food supply and 75% of food emissions. 3. Non state actors across the sector have pledged to support the declaration to transform to sustainable and regenerative food systems. Currently 155 have signed including Unilever and it remains open until 10 December. Sign on! 4. Climate conscious food is being served with 2/3 the menu at COP28 UAE is plant based. We’re making progress and we can only do this together! I look forward to collaboration like never before to move faster than ever before to #transform the #foodsystem because we don’t have time. SCIENCE BASED TARGETS IN ACTION As part of the PCF Sustainability Report, Food Drink Ireland is proud to work with member company Dawn Farms Dawn Farms undertook an evaluation of their value chain carbon impact in 2021. This was driven by the intention of setting emissions reduction targets in line with limiting global warming to 1.5oC. Partnering with The Carbon Trust, Dawn Farms undertook the process of validating their Scope 1, 2 and Scope 3 emissions. This approach has led to a reduction of 5,668 tonnes CO2 in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2023 relative to 2019. This equates to a 24% reduction over the period. This case study highlights how Dawn Farms are adopting a data-driven, collaborative approach, Dawn Farms is implementing an ambitious emission reduction programme to deliver on these commitments. They have initiated a pilot programme with selected suppliers to encourage continued progress at farm level and to drive the uptake of sustainability measures across mutual supply chains.

🌍 COP30 in Belém do Pará: Brazil’s Amazon Takes Center Stage 🌿 • Amazon's First COP: In 2025, the world turns its focus to the Amazon as Brazil hosts COP30 in Belém. This event highlights the Amazon’s critical role as a carbon sink and biodiversity hotspot essential for global climate stability. • A Platform for Brazil’s Leadership: COP30 is Brazil's chance to showcase climate leadership, emphasizing the preservation of the Amazon and sustainable development for its communities. It follows COP16’s shortfall on biodiversity financing, putting pressure on COP30 to drive meaningful commitments. • Brazil’s Emerging Carbon Market: Anticipated regulations could make Brazil a key player in the carbon market, encouraging emissions offsetting, forest conservation, and a low-carbon economy—boosting Brazil's influence on the global climate stage. • Plastic Waste Crisis in Focus: As one of the world’s largest plastic consumers, Brazil can lead in the fight against plastic pollution. Initiatives like #plasticcredits could incentivize waste reduction, foster a circular economy, and set new regional standards. • Challenges and Opportunities: Hosting in the Amazon presents logistical and infrastructure challenges. Balancing conservation with local economic needs, especially in extractive industries, will be crucial. Including voices from Indigenous groups and local stakeholders will enrich discussions with critical insights. • Brazil’s Moment to Lead: COP30 is a defining opportunity for Brazil to show the world that economic growth, environmental preservation, and social inclusion can coexist. EcoCircle will be there! 🌱 #COP30 #ClimateAction #CarbonMarket #PlasticWasteCrisis #SustainableDevelopment #EcoCircleGlobal

Day 5. #COP16 This COP is about agreeing implementation of commitments but not all questions are being answered. Raising them is as important so that we think of the solutions in a more rounded way. Here are a few that run as a thread through the week 🤢How did we create a world that is toxic to us? Water is polluted, food makes us sick, microplastic is in everything we touch, and we changed the climate in a way that causes havoc, disruption and death. How did we civilise outlrselves into this? (From the Indigenous communities representatives circle discussion) 🏷️Who puts the price on nature? Who values it ? The investor. Who benefits from nature? All of us. We all need it, it is not a product on a supermarket shelf. How can nature be priced by a financial model when it is what keeps us alive? (From the Indigenous communities representatives circle discussion) 🌊How do you manage the risks associated with deep sea mining? You do not - the ecosystems are too fragile and there is no way to mitigate the risks deep sea mining. The best part is it is not necessary - circularity solutions should be what we invest in, there is enough resource on the ground and in circulation - we need to use it efficiently. Some companies and governments already say they won’t buy minerals mined in the deep sea. (Ussif Rashid Sumaila ) 🌡️🌸Climate and biodiversity are not separate things - “many communities would think that you are crazy if you said that”. Plans need to be harmonised across climate and nature. (From the Indigenous communities representatives circle discussion) 📈The economic system will have to change one way or another - it will be forced and there will be less time, or the process can begin now. As it is now we just watch people die whilst we keep meeting for COPs. (Youth group representative) 📉What are the key solutions for nature? Main highlights across panels: 1. Policy - governments need to regulate and provide the enabling environment for businesses to be able to take action far enough. 2. Circular economy - the core strategy of a lot of businesses that rely on natural resources and sell products. Circular models and maximising resources is the practical way to drive change. 3. Clever use of subsidies - subsidies need to be redirected from where they harm to where they benefit. 4. Business support - a large proportion of businesses are SMEs, they need support and access to information, tools, data and resources - every business cannot afford paying for these, they should focus resources on actions. 5. Green skills and expertise across all levels, and specifically senior and board levels. A tiny % of boards have reported to have climate or nature expertise, and these are the boards that hold the decision making powers. (IEMA agrees with its #greenskills campaign) (📅Average age of a decision maker is 75 years old (Isis Riquelme) )
