Dry canal projects across Central America are popping up everywhere and can be built quickly, but their capacity to compete with an all-water route like the Panama Canal cannot be compared. Here are some examples of the many projects from Mexico to Colombia which promise handling cargo faster and cheaper than the already built (and largely paid off) canal.

Panama Canal chief offers land bridge option to transship containers across isthmus The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) seeks over $1 billion to fund a land-based container transport network connecting the Pacific and Atlantic, targeting large vessels unable to transit the canal. ACP Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales announced that $1.2–$1.4 billion is needed to establish a truck-based "land bridge" to transfer containers across the 50-mile isthmus, aiming to recapture cargo currently transshipped via Colombia's Cartagena port. This initiative addresses the canal’s limited capacity for industry mega-ships and could increase container throughput by over 60%, or 5 million TEUs annually. It would use existing port facilities and land already owned by ACP, but additional funding sources are necessary as the Panamanian government won’t finance the project. ACP aims to begin operating the land bridge by 2027, especially amid anticipated low water levels affecting canal operations. #PanamaCanal #Logistics #Transshipment #GlobalTrade #Infrastructure #ShippingIndustry #PortDevelopment #SupplyChain #ContainerShipping #MaritimeLogistics #CargoTransport #Funding Stay Informed: https://lnkd.in/eSmEbZvb

The Panama Canal is such a marvel of maritime engineering, connecting two important international maritime trade routes: the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It is estimated that shipping companies pay as much as $40,000 to $450,000 depending on some factors like vessel size and capacity to use the canal. Watch this very informative video about the Panama Canal. Port Oostende Fights to Preserve Critical RoRo Shipping Route. Port Oostende (Belgium) is locked in a legal battle against the proposed wind turbine park off Dunkirk, France, due to its overlap with the Dyckroute, a vital shipping corridor used in the past by ferries. This route, essential for connecting Oostende with southern England is now at risk. France’s consortium, led by Électricité de France, insists on the current location, potentially blocking the western access to Oostende’s port. This would jeopardise recent investments in RoRo facilities, critical to maintaining UK trade routes. The Port of Oostende has taken legal action, seeking an injunction to halt construction and a compensation claim for damages, underscoring the Dyckroute’s importance to Belgium’s third-largest seaport and the region’s economy. The Port Houston Authority has been selected to receive a grant of nearly $3 million for Port Houston’s PORT SHIFT—a pioneering program focused on driving zero-emission technology and sustainability initiatives throughout the port ecosystem. This project is more than an investment in infrastructure; it’s a commitment to a cleaner, more resilient future for the Houston community and global shipping industry. Here’s a quick breakdown of the program's nine essential tasks: Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory – Tracking emissions for effective reduction strategies. Truck Route Analysis – Optimizing logistics to minimize environmental impact. Infrastructure Cost Assessment – Evaluating investments for sustainable growth. Climate Action Plan – Setting goals for long-term environmental stewardship. Performance Measurement Framework – Establishing benchmarks for success. Advisory Council & Community Engagement Forum – Ensuring local voices are heard. Trucking Industry Collaborative – Partnering to adopt green technologies. Workforce Planning & Engagement – Preparing talent for a sustainable future. Resiliency Planning – Building adaptability into port operations. The PORT SHIFT initiative is an important step toward sustainable transformation in one of America’s busiest ports. We’re excited to see the impact this will have on Houston and beyond! 🌍 #Sustainability #ZeroEmissions #PortOfHouston #CleanEnergy

Exciting news – The Panama Canal is set to increase daily vessel transit slots from 34 to 36 starting in September due to improved water levels from early rains, following a period of severe drought in 2023 that had reduced transits and caused long wait times. Deputy Administrator Ilya Espino announced the gradual increase, aiming to return to normal operations by September without reducing transit slots during the summer, only adjusting the draft as needed. To enhance operational competitiveness and secure water sources, the canal authorities plan to build a new reservoir in six years at a cost of about $1.6 billion. This project aims to ensure sufficient water supply for continuous canal operations. This increase in transit capacity is expected to boost total revenues by 18% to $5.6 billion for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, with state contributions growing 13%. #AllWaysForwarding #Shipping #FreightForwarding #CustomsClearance #SupplyChain

At Minas-Rio, there’s a concerted effort to ensure nothing goes to waste. For example, the mine has formed a partnership with the Port of Açu in Rio de Janeiro to analyse how they can reuse water across different projects, effectively reducing water wastage. They’ve also developed a new project which sees ferronickel slag repurposed to build roads and highways across Brazil. 500,000 tons of slag is aimed to be allocated to highways and railways being constructed over the next two years, with an eventual aim of 100% of local roads being built in this way by 2026.
