Discussion Regarding a Proposal for a WTO Agreement for the Supply of Public Goods – 20 December 2024 Friday 20 December 2024 10:00am-11:00am ET // 16:00-17:00 CET Knowledge Ecology International will host a discussion regarding a proposal for a World Trade Agreement on the supply of public goods. The purpose of the proposal is to expand the supply of public goods by creating a mechanism within the WTO in which countries can volunteer to make binding commitments to supply heterogeneous public goods (in a manner somewhat similar to making commitments on liberalizing services in the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS)). James Love (KEI) and Luis Villarroel Villalon (Innovarte) will present the proposal and moderate a discussion with participants. Register for the event here: https://lnkd.in/dTikfFgi Prior to the event KEI will circulate a new briefing document on the proposal. https://lnkd.in/d9-WK-_g

Ensuring #wildlife #trade is sustainable is fundamental to safeguarding nature and nature’s contributions to people. Non-detriment findings (NDFs) are the CITES verification process for assessing international trade in CITES-listed species. 🌵🦎 🦈 🌴 Fresh off the press are 15 NDF guidance modules. These modules introduce generic NDF concepts including risk and uncertainty, adaptive management, and species' roles in their ecosystems, as well as more taxon- and thematic-specific guidance. To access these resources (available in EN and FR, ES soon) and more follow the link below.

Studies on soy production in #Brazil often focus on environmental degradation. However, the soy sector also jeopardizes local access to sufficient healthy food – and raises questions of justice, as research results from CDE, Universität Bern, and the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro show. Join us on a virtual trip to Santarém, Brazil, and read more about the local impact of the soy-meat complex of the international #agribusiness in our storymap. The report is based on scientific studies of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro in collaboration with CDE, Universität Bern. Many countries currently subsidize their industrial fishing fleets despite the well known negative impacts of overfishing. Governments might consider drawing back subsidies if they perceive that the costs outweigh the benefits, but individual countries are driven by their own domestic economic interests. This situation exemplifies the “tragedy of the commons,” an economic dilemma that is well understood in theory but lacks global solutions. Aaron Berman, a fourth year PhD student in the MIT Department of Economics, is working to address this issue by analyzing data and ecological models to assess the impact these subsidies have on fisheries and explore more sustainable alternatives to offer to policymakers.
