Two weeks ago, Tallahassee dodged a bullet when Hurricane Helene shifted paths at the last moment. We were lucky. But many others weren't—they faced the full impact and lost so much. As Hurricane Milton approaches, even though Tallahassee isn't directly in its path, I want to share meteorologist Denis Phillips' comprehensive hurricane prep list. I think it could be incredibly helpful to those in Hurricane Milton's path or for future reference if a storm is approaching. It's full of practical, down-to-earth tips that can make a big difference in staying prepared and calm. You can find Denis' list here: https://lnkd.in/enTd5yJW I also want to open this up to you all: What are your go-to hurricane preparation tips? To prepare in advance means you are shrinking the stress experienced when a large-scale disaster occurs. You have the means to respond in some way to overcome the challenges you might now be facing. When the electricity goes out, your family has flashlights and batteries. When you get hungry and thirsty in those situations, you remember the water and non-perishable foods you stored away. When your roof gets damaged from strong winds, you're able to make quick repairs with the tarps and supplies you tucked away in advance that might ultimately save your home from widespread water damage. Consider redundancies. Think outside the box. Stay prepared. And always stay safe!

Based on current predictions, Hurricane Francine will be a Category 1 or 2 hurricane that will track somewhere between Lafayette and Baton Rouge. The Saffir-Simpson scale indicates that a Category I storm should produce minimal damage, but a Category II storm would cause moderate damage, including roof, window, and tree damage. However, these are generalizations, and local conditions could be better or worse. For example, Hurricane Beryl, which hit the Houston area, was only a Category I hurricane, but we observed numerous instances where trees fell on homes, and many people were without power for up to weeks. Because each storm presents its unique characteristics, the damage to each home should be evaluated independently.
