When you read the paper, watch the news or scroll on social media,  at some point you will see dogs and cats (young, old, cute, fuzzy, big, small), children and adults facing challenges  - and all of them need help.  In animal rescue there aren’t  enough homes and municipal shelters, especially, are bursting at the seams. For most of them, they’re required to accept “lost” dogs/cats within their jurisdiction. I live in Oklahoma and for some reason, southern states seem to have a bigger problem with pet overpopulation than northern states.  We’re getting closer to a multi-faceted approach (think collective impact). For families it is multi-dimensional.  Diversion centers play a key role and help relys on consistent financial support.  When it all comes together, amazing things happen.  And once you’re a part of that solution, it not only gives you hope - but you find yourself on a mission to share with others. I do know $$$ (or lack thereof) is a key component to access of services, help and ongoing progress. Education is important, but one of the most important pieces is aways $$$$.  It needs to be consistent which today includes end-of-year donations, monthly donations via a check (I write maybe one a month???), purchasing supplies on Amazon shipped to the nonprofit  and then there’s round-ups from Harness Giving ….the new tool in the tool box. Trust me – it takes a complete tool box to maintain momentum and ensure the staff (and volunteers) can do their jobs!!! After arriving at our accommodation, the first stop on our Creative Green Adventure was a last-minute visit to a local dog shelter. We were invited by AIMM – Marine Environment Research Association’s cook, Bartosz, who volunteers there. Tiny Shelter Albufeira is a small dog shelter run by Isabel Searle and her team of volunteers. They’re currently caring for nearly 90 dogs, each with their own heartbreaking but hopeful stories. Isabel showed us around, introducing us to many of the dogs and sharing how they came to the shelter. Because of their limited space and resources (they don’t receive any support from local councils or the government), they can only respond to the most severe cases of abuse and neglect. It’s tough, but they’re doing such incredible work with what they have. During our visit, we donated some food, kindly provided by Beco, and we’re hoping to organise more regular support from brand sponsors. Spending time with the dogs was so emotional – most loved the company, but some were still too nervous around us because of their past. I just wish we could have stayed longer! If you’re inspired, remember there’s probably a shelter near you that could use some love. Donating your time, money, or supplies makes a huge difference to shelters like Tiny Shelter.
