We all know how sparse good talent is in commercial insurance. And yet I continue to witness how hesitation can cost firms the opportunity to hire top talent. One of my clients had been searching for a Commercial Broker to join their growing team. They had been searching for 3 months due to the technical nature of the position. I presented them with an exceptional candidate who fit their requirements to a tee - the right technical insurance expertise, industry qualifications, and a proven track record of driving client relations and managing complex client accounts. My client seemed very interested in the candidate's profile, however due to meetings, holidays and a busy schedule, they decided to "take some time to review" before moving forward with an interview. Unfortunately, during that delay, another firm swooped in and extended an offer. By the time my client decided they wanted to speak with the candidate, they had already accepted the other role. The moral of the story? When you find a great commercial broker, don't wait - act quickly. The best talent often doesn't stay on the market long. Indecision can mean missing out on the opportunity to bring top performers onto your team. Lesson learned the hard way by this particular brokerage. Don't let it happen to you. Stay agile in your commercial broking hiring process and be prepared to move fast when you identify a stand-out candidate. It could make all the difference.

I guess this is insurance week for my posts! We have moved through a number of years in the insurance industry with a heavily experienced workforce. Across the industry our most technically skilled are retiring, and talks of the skills gap abound. When I ask those who have not been attached to high insurance skills, “What is the most important skill set?” They quickly say “customer service.” Beneath that response - active listening, professionalism, and friendly. Now, customer service will almost hinge on - ultimately on accuracy. When I press those without core business experience, the technical skills rarely come up. Why? Well, they don’t know nor have observed the more complex skills at work. Those roles were full and we weren’t necessarily hiring for those. Now, we as an industry are. To hire and prepare a workforce for high tech skills, we need to recognize and dig into these. Being emotionally intelligent and poorly skilled is actually emotionally unintelligent. Customers don’t arrive for the friendship as a primary focus, they arrive to receive skilled help in a ln area that seems complex…insurance. This source does a nice job highlighting the technical skills needed in insurance.

For sales professionals looking to enter a stable and impactful industry, commercial insurance is a top contender. However, success in this field takes a unique mindset and skill set. Here are some key considerations if you're planning to jump into the world of commercial insurance sales: 1. Know Your Market Commercial insurance serves a broad range of industries, from construction and tech to manufacturing and beyond. Understanding the risks and regulations each sector faces is essential. This is where preparation meets opportunity – the more you know, the better you can address each client’s specific needs. 2. Resilience Is Key The nature of commercial insurance makes it largely recession-resistant, but it’s not without challenges. Long sales cycles and navigating client decision-makers require patience and resilience. You’ll need to build trust and prove your value over time. 3. Focus on Building Long-Term Relationships Unlike many other sales fields, commercial insurance is about relationship-building over quick sales. Your clients will rely on you to safeguard their business assets and livelihoods. Success often hinges on your ability to listen, understand, and build strong, long-term connections. 4. Be a Problem-Solver Commercial insurance sales professionals are consultative, helping clients mitigate complex risks and navigate legalities. Always approach each case with a solutions mindset – your job is to help businesses operate with confidence, no matter the economy. 5. Embrace Continuous Learning This field is highly regulated and constantly evolving. Staying up-to-date on industry trends, legal changes, and the specific needs of different sectors will set you apart. For those ready to commit to a meaningful career, commercial insurance sales offers stability, growth potential, and the chance to make a real difference for businesses. It’s a challenging field, but the rewards are worth it. #CommercialInsurance #SalesCareer #RiskManagement #InsuranceSales #CareerAdvice #RecessionResilient

As I continue to evolve in my career, I realize that self reflection enables me to recognize my strengths, embrace my preferences, and chart a path that aligns with my values and aspirations. This is one of the many ways I am reminded of the importance of SELF AWARENESS . Whether at the backend of an insurance company or in the boardroom of a consulting firm, I am driven by a desire to make meaningful impact—one that may go unnoticed by many, but profoundly felt. For over a decade, I navigated the world of insurance underwriting, diligently assessing risks and crafting policies from the comfort of my desk. As an underwriter, my role was crucial to the sustainability of the company yet often overlooked, much like the silent conductor behind a grand performance. The appeal to working behind the scenes where my impact was felt but my presence went unnoticed, perfectly suited my personality. In the realm of insurance, precision and foresight are paramount. Each policy crafted was a delicate balance between safeguarding against potential risks and ensuring financial viability for the company. It was a role that demanded meticulous attention to detail and ability to interpret complex data—a challenge I embraced with candour. However, after over a decade in the insurance industry, I felt the desire for a new challenge, a different perspective. This led me to pivot my career towards management consulting, where I now operate at the backend, leveraging my expertise to drive strategic initiatives and optimize business processes. Transitioning from underwriting to management consulting has been a journey of self-discovery and growth. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone, challenging me to adapt to new environments and tackle diverse problems. Yet, at its core, both roles share a common thread: the ability to analyze information, identify opportunities, and implement effective solutions—all while remaining behind the scenes. Self-awareness has been instrumental in navigating this transition. Recognizing my strengths—such as analytical thinking and attention to detail—has allowed me to thrive in both domains. Moreover, acknowledging my preference for working behind the scenes has empowered me to carve out a niche where I can make tangible impact without necessarily seeking the spotlight, even though it has its benefits. In the realm of management consulting, my experience as an underwriter has proven invaluable. Drawing on my background, helps bring a unique perspective to client engagements, offering insights grounded in practical experience and a deep understanding of risk management principles. My counsel to you as a professional: Be self conscious, self audit daily, and deliberately position your mind to take decisions and actions that will leapfrog your performances and achievements✌️. #careertips #careeradvice #consulting #linkedin
