For anyone reading news about proposals for a so-called conversion therapy ban being announced, it's important to understand two things: 1) There is no evidence that gay conversion therapy happens in the UK anymore, not in the way people think of it (electric shock or aversion therapy). At most, some faith groups will have some sort of praying ritual. Any practices that are actually abusive are already illegal under various existing legislation , eg kidnapping, holding without consent, physical or mental abuse, torture, etc. 2) Proponents of this ban consider a neutral therapist asking open ended questions to a child with gender dysphoria, or gender confusion (what activists would call a "trans child"), to be conversion therapy. It is not. Most children that activists describe as "trans", as evidenced by data from various studies and the UK's former Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) for children, have several other mental health issues or complex issues at a far higher rate than typical. These include autism, history of abuse or trauma, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and a significant proportion will just turn out to be gay/lesbian adults. This ban would prevent a therapist from exploring such issues if the conversation revealed that any of them might be the cause of a child's gender confusion. They will be forced to simply affirm the gender identity. Sounds dystopian, doesn't it. Sounds as if it could never happen. Well, it already is happening in Canada. Do not be fooled into believing this legislation is necessary, or fooled into supporting it. It will criminalise therapists who are doing actual, decent, neutral therapy. The underlying agenda of activists is to get "gender identity" into law.
📢 We welcome the UK Government’s commitment to #BanConversionTherapy in the #KingsSpeech. We’ve campaigned relentlessly to ban these abusive practices. Now, we need a comprehensive bill with no loopholes and no delays. The UK Govt needs to publish a comprehensive Bill to #BanConversionTherapy in all forms, for all LGBTQ+ people and in all settings, as soon as possible. Conversion practices are abuse, and they must be banned once and for all. It's thanks to thousands of LGBTQ+ people and allies that the ban on conversion practices is in the King's Speech today. We’ve come so far. Together, we must now secure a ban that protects us all. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ https://lnkd.in/eRgWQEBY

5moThanks for brining this to light James. It's a horrible (and I suspect deliberate) mis-use of language to describe this as a proposed "ban on conversion therapy" when, as you highlight, it's a ban on even the mildest challenge to the totalitarian dogma of gender ideology.
