🌍 𝗔 𝗠𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗔𝘁𝗹𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗢𝗣𝟭𝟲 🌍 The launch of the Global Ecosystems Atlas at COP16 marks an important step forward in safeguarding our planet’s ecosystems. The release of this powerful tool gves us a dedicated resource for mapping and monitoring ecosystems worldwide, developed by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). What makes this Atlas such a game-changer? This tool goes beyond highlighting the health and risks facing diverse ecosystems, enabling empowerment of 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀, 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 to make informed, sustainable decisions. With detailed insights into biodiversity, climate change, and land degradation, the Atlas offers a comprehensive, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. 🌎 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗚𝗮𝗽𝘀 – Traditionally, understanding ecosystems has been a challenge due to inconsistent data across borders. Over 55% of ecosystems remain poorly understood, leaving us vulnerable to misinformed decisions. The Atlas fills these gaps with Earth observation, AI, and field data, aligning with the IUCN’s Global Ecosystem Typology for clear, reliable information on land, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. 🌱 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 – For businesses, the Atlas offers the data they need to incorporate environmental risks into strategies; for development banks and financial institutions the tool can be used to to make sustainable investments. Additionally, it can be used by Indigenous communities to provide evidence for conservation efforts. Open access to Atlas data is also a win for researchers and academics, advancing our understanding of ecosystems worldwide. The Atlas has already had demonstrable success: In countries like South Africa and Mozambique, it’s enabling cross-border collaboration to protect shared ecosystems like savannas and coral reefs, helping identify risks and prioritize conservation. This cross-border thinking is critical for our re-wilding efforts to be sustainable and effective - this tool gives us the data, but also provides us with a challenge, to use it for all the good it can facilitate. #Sustainability #GlobalEcosystemsAtlas #COP16 #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #PlanetaryHealth Image credits: Eutah Mizushima

During #COP16 in Colombia, Pippa Howard met with Arup’s Regional Nature Director Tom Butterworth to discuss how eDNA is revolutionising our understanding of biodiversity and ecosystems. By using environmental DNA (eDNA), we’re able to capture and analyse fragments of DNA from water, soil, air, and even insects. This approach can reveal hundreds of species in a single sample. As Pippa puts it, eDNA gives us a picture of "who's eating who" - allowing us to see the structure, composition, and function of ecosystems like never before. With these insights, we’re able to steward biodiversity far more effectively - and with rising interest in nature-positive strategies, eDNA offers businesses and financial institutions actionable insights. This is crucial as industries and policymakers focus on metrics that reflect the state of nature, helping to set clear objectives for sustainability and ecosystem health. The momentum around biodiversity and ecosystem health is growing. Together, with tools like eDNA, NatureMetrics is committed to helping businesses track, measure, and continuously improve their impact on nature.

#beesustainable 👉 Today we celebrate World Environment Day, an important time to reflect on the importance of protecting and preserving our planet. This year's theme is 'Our Land. Our Future. We are hashtag #GenerationRestoration: according to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40% of the planet's land is in a state of degradation. A figure that highlights the need to take concrete action to restore all degraded land. 📌 Thanks to our scientific partner 3Bee, we took part in the 'Oases of Biodiversity' project. Thanks to technology, we can 'listen' to the beat of nature and interpret its signals to understand how to take care of it. We are monitoring the oases to collect essential data that will help us understand the health of the ecosystems and plan targeted restoration efforts. Our efforts are part of a wider initiative involving many companies to create the largest ecological corridor for pollinators in Europe. Every action counts: by complying with ESG criteria and the CSRD Directive, we can make a difference to the future of biodiversity. #aresline #3bee #OasesOfBiodiversity

I recently saw a brilliant & engaging post by Oliver Dauert comparing & demystifying the twin #biodiversity & #climate crises. I loved how Oliver made clear links between the two, and summarised some key points. However, I felt a few things were missing, so I took the liberty to adapt & build upon it. Here's my own #HotTake: 🌍 Planet boundaries ~ both are out of the safe operating space ✅ 🤝 Deal ~ both had historic policy landmarks in the last decade: Paris Agreement & Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) ✅ 🔬 Science ~ both are backed by overwhelming scientific evidence. Climate: IPCC; Biodiversity: IPBES ✅ 🎯 Objectives & KPIs are where I diverge a bit from Oliver ~ IMO the overarching global outcome goal for nature & climate IS healthy & abundant biodiversity (i.e., #NaturePositive). If the extent & condition of ecosystems and relative richness & abundance of species are improving globally 🌳 (and societies are thriving) then we have succeeded. To do this we need to mitigate key pressures on biodiversity, which, according to IPBES, includes: 🚜 Land & Sea Use Change 🎣 Direct exploitation 🌡️ Climate change 🏭 Pollution 🐸 Invasive Species 🌏 Each pressure has a global target outlined in the Paris Agreement & GBF 🎯 Limit temperature increase to 1.5°C 🎯 ‘Close to zero’ loss of land & sea areas of high biodiversity importance; protect & restore 30% 🎯 >50% reduction in excess nutrients, pesticides & highly hazardous chemicals; eliminate plastic pollution 🎯 Use & harvesting of wild species & water resources within sustainable limits 🎯 >50% reduction in rates of invasive sp introduction + eradication. 🏢 Corporations & institutions can contribute to global targets by setting their own institutional net outcome goals & targets on: - State of nature in sphere of influence - Pressures on biodiversity from operations & value chain - Actions to abate pressures and improve the state of nature 📊 Potential KPIs to track progress: - State of nature: Extent & condition of ecosystems, relative richness & abundance of species - Land & Sea Use Change: Quality-adjusted ha - Direct exploitation: N, kg, L/year - Climate change: Carbon ton - Pollution: NO2, SO2, kg to landfill - Invasive Species: events/year 💪 Focus ~ I prefer to focus on an integrated approach across all sectors to: ⬇️ Do less bad stuff (avoid & reduce on-going negative impacts e.g., by substituting high-impact commodities, improving circularity & efficiency) ⬆️ Do more good stuff (counterbalance unabatable negative impacts & make proportional contributions to historic bad stuff by investing in restoration) 🤝 Collaborate to change the system (work with others in your value chain, sector, and land/seascapes to tackle system-wide barriers & deliver societal outcomes) 🐻 Combine ~ Remember: climate is a key pressure on nature, and nature is a cost-effective climate solution. Does this resonate? What have I missed? The Biodiversity Consultancy Ltd, Nature Positive Initiative
