I have conducted 200+ Life Cycle Assessments in the last 6 months on consumer electronics, packaging, furniture, apparel and automotive. This is what stood out: 🔴Choosing the right material is crucial, but a wasteful design remains a wasteful design. 🔴Materials and manufacturing often contribute between 50%–70% of the overall impact of any product, especially for packaging and furniture. 🔴You could easily reduce at least 5% of your product’s overall impact by tweaking its design alone. 🔴The problem in the apparel industry isn’t just the materials; it’s also how they are produced and discarded. 🔴You can’t improve your product’s environmental impact if you don’t know what it is: make a baseline study! 🔴Making assumptions can cost you money and credibility. For example, you might think a modular design is the right sustainable approach, only to realize that it made things three times worse, and now it’s too late to change your mind. 🔴A circular product in a linear business remains a linear product: design can help, but only to a certain extent. 🔴The way you manage your product’s end-of-life makes the difference between a linear business and a circular one. 🔴The energy consumed during the manufacturing process and throughout the product’s lifecycle can account for up to 80% in consumer electronics. 🔴The main problem in a packaging lifecycle is the abuse of unnecessary materials. 🔴Building a solid material strategy for your product means looking at its lifecycle and designing it from material extraction to material disposal and remanufacturing. Understanding and optimizing your product's environmental impact requires more than just good intentions; it demands precise data and informed decisions. Do you wanna know more? Each stage and decision, from material sourcing to end-of-life management, affect the overall environmental impact of a product. Design is key, but it's not a solution in itself. "A circular product in a linear business remains a linear product." What is the plan for its end-of-life stage?

A wonderful data visualisation of the lifecycle assessment of a jumper. We should have these for all the products we use. But the real insight is in Gianluca's post copy. It’s also a sad reminder that there are no real circular businesses, because we lack the systems and infrastructure. When we're only recycling 9% of the plastic we use globally, the truth is we’re not even close to being a recycling economy, let alone a circular one. The regulation and policy chain is dragging, so progressive brands will need to lead the way. Following the pointers in Gianluca's post is a start. But product and packaging sustainability is complex and hard to navigate—with many suppliers talking their own book, and unable to back up their claims with data. For independent guidance and the precise and ISO-certified data needed to understand your impact and make informed decisions, give us a call at Phantm.

Circular economy 101. A circular product in a linear system unfortunately becomes a linear product. Thanks Gianluca Managò for articulating it so clearly and advocating for a thorough revaluation of our existing systems. #circularity #systemschange
