Place-based impact investing doesn't have to be complicated, and it's not just for institutions, either. Bristol Energy Cooperative is on its tenth share offer, this time for £1 million to add an additional megawatt to its portfolio of solar projects, raising the money from individual investors through the Triodos Bank crowdfunding platform. The Community Interest Company (CIC) has been operating since 2011, and so far has raised £15 million to fund clean energy projects in the Bristol area, while also delivering £400k to separately fund community projects (their website has maps for both). Investor-members get a vote in one of the UK's oldest and largest community energy cooperatives, plus: - get a financial return - contribute to decarbonising UK's energy - increase the UK's energy security - support local communities Community energy is one of the most effective and accessible ways for citizen investors to get involved in impact investing. #communityenergy #impactinvesting #renewableenergy #placemaking Community Energy England Becky Feather Emma Bridge https://lnkd.in/gy4GYzxX

The UK's community energy investments have a reasonable claim to being the ideal form of place-based impact investing: - money is raised locally (mostly) - money is deployed locally and projects are visible to residents - both social and environmental benefits - expectation of a reasonable financial return - managed by a non-profit and governed democratically The key thing missing is scale - the sector is small and has grown very little over the last few years. The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee of the UK House of Commons recently opened a consultation to identify the policy, market and regulatory reforms that could unlock the sector's potential. (If you are not familiar with community energy projects, the video below gives you a flavour of projects by Bristol Energy Cooperative, currently fundraising on the Triodos Bank crowdfunding platform.) Community Energy - perhaps the "ideal form of place-based impact investing". I couldn't agree more, and is why I joined Community Energy England. The next phase of UK decarbonisation is all about more onshore renewables, clean heating systems and electrifying vehicles, it is all going to be place based! A community energy enterprise can be the bridge that connects the trust and stability of the public sector, with the investment scale and agility of the private sector.

In the last 3 weeks we’ve raised an incredible £211K from more than 240 investors. It has been a fantastic return to the Crowdcube platform and we’d like to give a huge thank you to everyone who’s supported our crowdfunding journey. This EIS raise supports a pivotal point for Flex Marine, with funds enabling the collection of vital data from our island demonstration project. Data collection on operations, energy capture and efficiencies is integral to proving our technology can work effectively to power coastal communities and businesses. It’s a crucial step towards commercialisation, and we already have a pipeline of early potential customers, who we’ll be presenting evidence of our full demonstration project to. We’d love to welcome even more of our network and community to share in our journey, but there are just two days left to secure your share. Click below to be part of our future for as little as £10.14 https://lnkd.in/ey_2e5gh #tidalenergy #cleanenergy #renewableenergy #sustainability #sustainableinvestment #crowdfunding #EIS #investment #raising #renewables #ESG Don’t invest unless you’re prepared to lose all the money you invest. 🚀 We were proud to launch the second phase of the Energy Resilience Fund last month. With £15 million invested alongside Social Investment Business and other partners, the fund aims to support enterprises in reducing energy usage, stabilising costs and contributing to long-term Net Zero goals. 💡 Businesses can apply for funding between £25,000 and £250,000, with 40% delivered as grants to meet the need for essential financial and technical support. This funding can be used to install energy-saving measures, renewable energy generation technology or explore other energy-efficient options. 🌱 With rising energy costs becoming a growing challenge for charities and social enterprises, social investment offers an innovative solution—providing resources that help these organisations build resilience and stay focused on delivering impact.
