Last week, I had the pleasure to attend the Service Design Global Conference in Helsinki #SDGC24. This year’s theme highlighted the power of service design in driving strategic business impact. Below are some key insights I found valuable. 💥 Service Design: Beyond Aesthetics and Customer Experience Traditionally associated with aesthetics and customer experience, service design is evolving to play a strategic role within organisations. Andreas Pattichis, Design Director & Partner at Hellon Ltd, presented on "Debunking the Myth: The Tangible Impact of Service Design", showcasing how service design creates measurable business outcomes, debunking the notion that it's limited to superficial improvements. 💥 Integrating Design into Strategy Service design is becoming a strategic imperative for organisations. OP Financial Group’s presentation on "The Rise of Strategic Design" demonstrated how they’ve integrated strategic designers into their strategy processes, emphasizing the growing role of design thinking in top-level decision-making. 💥 Fostering Design Maturity Organizations that embrace design across all levels unlock greater innovation and impact. Nina Hirvonen, DesignOps Lead at OP Financial Group, presented on "Growing Design Maturity and Creating Impact through Design", offering insights on building a design-mature culture that supports innovation. 💥 Leveraging Service Design for Foresight Service design methodologies can be used to develop foresight tools for anticipating future trends. Satu Miettinen (She/Her), Professor of Service Design, presented "Service Designing a Foresight Tool for Strategic Leadership," providing examples of how service design can enhance strategic foresight. 💥 Embracing the "Waves of Change" Three key "waves of change" were highlighted at the conference: moving from rigid to flexible processes, focusing on action over reporting, and fostering collaboration across disciplines. Leaders who embrace these shifts can create more agile and impactful organizations. Hellon Ltd's presentation advocated for a more adaptable, action-oriented approach to service design. 💥 Strategic Design: A Dedicated Approach The emergence of strategic design as a discipline underscores service design’s power to drive business success. OP Financial Group exemplifies this by integrating strategic designers into both the preparation and implementation of their strategic choices.
