As I continue my journey in food service sales, I’ve learned that understanding the unique needs of each restaurant is key to providing the best solutions. Whether it’s finding the right kitchen equipment or selecting high-quality ingredients, it’s all about tailoring the approach to fit each client’s specific requirements. One lesson that has stood out to me is the importance of taking the time to truly understand what clients are looking for. As a buyer myself, I always responded better to the sales rep who invested the time to understand my needs, discussed specials and new products rather than those who just sent a quick text. Who can relate?

Maybe this sales lesson could be of use to you, especially if there is a “gatekeeper” buyer. For a consumer to be able to buy Currently at a store or at a restaurant, I first have to sell to that store or restaurant. I’ve now done over 20 cold sales calls. I’ve encountered 1 person who fits my customer demographic (female 25-40, Swiftie) but she wasn’t a Lifestyle consumer—she was an Explorer, meaning she was more educated about wine terminology and grape varieties than my target customer. So 0 for 20 of the people who make the decision to offer my wine to sell to my consumer are my actual consumer. Most of them are 50 year old men. So before we taste the wine, I tell them who my customer is. I explain what they value (beautiful packaging, easy to love flavor profile, doesn’t require food, calories and 0g sugar printed large on front of bottle). And then we taste the wine. And every time—20 for 20–they agree that this wine would be great for the customer. This reframing away from “what do you think about this product,” to “does this product deliver what our target customer wants?” is pivotal. One retailer (again, approx 50 year old male) asks if the aluminum bottle is a turn off to those who would think it is inferior because it’s not in glass. “To Traditionalists, yes. But my target customer is more open minded and values the design and portability.” Traditionalists tend to skew older—and I’m ok with not appealing to all of them. If that store only has those people shopping though, it’s something to acknowledge. Bottom line: be clear with the gatekeeper who they are trying to help sell to. And know what your end consumer cares about. If it’s not terroir, tannin and tradition, explain what else it is. Share in comments how this can apply to your industry. #wine #sales #consumerdata #casestudy
