Will planning regulations be simplified or relaxed around micro-abattoirs, in response to advocacy from Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA) and its president Tammi Jonas? The AFSA’s advocacy around planning barriers to small-scale meat producers is detailed in Andrew Miller’s recent piece in Stock & Land. The demands on peri-urban land are certainly complex, with plenty of competing priorities always on the table: food, housing, amenity, environment. . . But it’s so important that our planning systems enable food production in these areas, especially where the land is of high agricultural value. Advocates argue that on farm, small-scale meat processing is a logical, ancillary activity to food production for local communities, and low risk in terms of amenity and environment.

4moAs I retired from the front line after 50 years trying to improve #FarmSafety, the fact that the fatal incidence rate in GB hasn’t changed for 40 years saddens me deeply. But I am an eternal optimist and there is hope, as can be seen from Stephanie Berkeley’s #FarmSafetyWeek interview - by working to change the industry through educating and influencing young people. Keep it up Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies) You are #MakingADifference and the industry needs you ! 👈🏻
