As many are aware, my son (age 2) was born profoundly deaf. This is extremely hard hitting but seems to be a familiar experience to many deaf people 😞 I've had the privilege of being introduced to the most amazing community of deaf people and I find myself very fortunate to be included by them. Hearing people should be doing the same for them! How would you feel if you weren't included? If every day was a struggle to get access to something that was a basic need? That your ability to access something, others take for granted, was difficult and exhausting? Think about it..... If you have a business who needs training on diversity and inclusion please feel free to reach out. I will be offering inclusion training at a reduced rate as I want as many people to have awareness, as possible. #inclusion #diversity #awareness #deafawareness

This week is Deaf Awareness Week (6-12 May). At Treloar School, we have been thinking about the importance of including everyone and how we can make sure Deaf people have equal access to communication. Students have been watching this great video from the National Deaf Children’s Society to learn top deaf awareness tips: https://lnkd.in/grJdwhjQ In our Friday assembly, we shared some of our favourite tips and even learned a few BSL signs! Students said they had learned about the importance of getting a Deaf person’s attention before talking to them and making sure you are facing each other. They also said it is really important to find out how a Deaf person likes to communicate – something that is also really important for many students at Treloar School who use different ways of communicating. Our overall favourite communication tip was to be patient and don’t give up! #DeafAwarenessWeek #Inclusion #SignLanguage #Communication #Education

🔊 Deaf Awareness Week Tip #5: Are accessible announcements part of your public service commitment in the UK? Ensure that your announcements are inclusive by providing options like sign language interpretation, captioning, or written materials in an easy-to-read format. Incorporating visual video screens can emphasise voice announcements, making information more accessible to all. Let's prioritise accessibility to ensure that everyone in our community can access important information. #DeafAwarenessWeek 🌐 🔍 Google Search: @timscannellDA Curious about how accessibility affects our communities? Have you ever felt left out of a conversation? What about this situaton: A group of people without knowing close a circle of people talking on you because you seemed to only be listening and not engaging? What about this scenario: You're by yourself in a social environment where the world around you is busy meeting and doing "social things" yet you are alone in the middle of it all like an island lost at sea? Try this one: What about in a lecture theatre or a classroom of some sort or a work training session? We all talk about "Isolation" but how many of you really truly know the meaning of this word? I ask you this question: How many of you live it every single day? I have so hear me out: I have experienced for a very long time over many different situations and environments. Even now where I abide the only contact I have with another person who signs is my interpreters ( I have to drive an hour to another city for Deaf social events). This is because there isn't any support here for us locally in the form of Deaf activities. Its no wonder when two Deaf get together at a local cafe (like I said on Friday) the community will watch with great interest. Not to be rude but they simply don't see it. It's not the norm where I am. Yet they too don't understand the meaning of isolation. Yesterday I was researching for my behind the scenes creative project and was looking at children's picture books in the local bookstore. I asked if they had any within the DEI space. I had to naturally explain what that was and the answer I got was no nothing. That did surprise me for a bookshop but didn't surprise me when I am the recipient of the local mindsets. I will be working on this even more now. - watch this space. We simply can't expect people to have a mindset change when they simply don't see it or have any examples to witness first. We in the DEI need to bring the change. The British BBC TV Drama titled Waterloo Road that has been running for a few years now has a great example both visually and signed as well as spoken about this when Deaf Character Luca Smith (actor Danny Murphy) tries to talk about it. Communication for PWD It is beneficial to communicate well with everyone, especially those who are blind, disabled, or belong to other groups. Unfortunately, some hearing coworkers have difficulty communicating successfully in front of a deaf colleague who is alone during break times. They frequently leave out deaf coworkers from conversations, presuming the issues are unimportant to them. This lack of consideration can be harmful and isolating. Regardless of the issue, everyone must learn appropriate ways to include deaf colleagues in conversations and be aware of their communication needs. Let us build an inclusive environment in which everyone feels appreciated and included. ~Plen-Tsarina Bautista Advocate of Deaf Community
