Investing in farmland offers a unique opportunity for long-term returns through income and appreciation, much like other real estate investments. Farmland can diversify your portfolio but requires understanding the specific demands of agriculture. Key factors to consider are crop type, land management and other natural conditions. While farmland investing is steady and patient, it's important to enter with realistic expectations about the timeline and commitment involved. A quick read on investing in this sector was recently published on CNN. Chuffed to announce the #RICS published my white paper yesterday: Impact of Carbon Markets on the Rural Economy (link http://bit.ly/3UIGvOK) This project began in 2019 after reading “Call of the Reed Warbler” authored by Australian farmer, Charles Massy. The book highlighted the role of soil carbon in regenerating degraded agricultural soils and motivated me to explore how the surveying industry could connect the #rural finance industry, #carbonmarkets, and landowners to promote soil carbon sequestration. Research for this paper has taken me to rural Tanzania with #darkearthcarbon, an agribusiness, to Cambridge working with Mark Russell at #carterjonas in the Natural Capital team, and varied folks in Australia involved in this space. The paper covers key topics including valuation challenges, landowner opportunities (and challenges), carbon market dynamics, loan risk assessment, and the agricultural sector's role. It’s designed as a foundational resource for stakeholders across rural divisions, helping shift sustainable land management discussions from theory to practical application. If any of this this resonates with you, do reach out - I'd love to connect whether to discuss the paper directly, share ideas, or present on the major topics. This paper lead to many great conversations with folks who have contributed to the content, including Fabian Knödler-Thoma, Natasha Davie, PhD, Fenning Welstead, Cassandra Austen, Annika Richter, John Lockhart FRICS FBIAC CEnv, David Lewis, James Adamson, Mike Tustin, roddy mclean, Adam White and of course Fiona Mannix from the #RICS who’s navigated all the behind the scenes mechanisations in getting this done!
