Studios and exhibitors are horribly unaware of how bad the economy is. Lets be very clear, inflation has caused a recession. In times like these entertainment is the first thing to go in a budget. Whether it’s going to the actual movie theater, or canceling streaming subscriptions. Entertainment is unfortunately the collateral damage in an economic downturn. #film#economy#business#recession
FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Ouch, it’s looking really bad. Warner Bros.’ Furiosa is possibly posting the lowest opening for a Memorial Day movie in 41 years with a 4-day between $31M-$35M. How the holy heck is that? If the George Miller-directed prequel comes in on the low end, the last time a No. 1 movie or Memorial […]

I remember when I was 16 in the winter of 2011, it was the first time I not only noticed but participated in the so-called Oscars season - when studios would intentionally release their films to a wide audience in January or February, MONTHS after showing their film in L.A. County to qualify for the Oscars, so that mid-budget dramas like The King's Speech, Black Swan and True Grit would still be running in cinemas by the time the Oscars would announce their Best Picture shortlist (which is simply good for business if these films are still in the public awareness)! 🙂💡🎞 💰 Because outside of those months, my nearest multiplex would seem to offer only one of three things: horror, adult/teen comedy or the summer blockbuster! 🔪🤣☀️
I used to think that the moment the major Hollywood studios began to shift away from mid-budget dramas ALL YEAR ROUND to blockbuster franchises planned out YEARS in advance was the success of Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone and LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring! 🔮 And it REALLY accelerated after the 2008 crash, because studios from that point on didn't want to take risks anymore, and instead pour money into fewer films with bigger budgets designed for a GLOBAL audience (which the MCU would set the standard)! 📉💰💥

[We Created a Fun DTF Film Ad!]
Recently, I teamed up with our Creative Producer, Jason, to create a fun and engaging piece to promote Triforce’s DTF film.
Unfortunately, today’s DTF film market has become so competitive that price often outweighs quality. We wanted to address quality issues in a humorous way to satirize this trend.
Creating this ad was a great experience, and we’re excited to hear your feedback. If the response is positive, we plan to turn this concept into a series.
Check it out below, and let us know what you think in the comments!
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond recently sat down with Variety to talk about last year’s record-breaking performance, our relationships with iconic filmmakers, expansion beyond blockbusters into new and exciting events, and the exceptional film slate for the next few years.

In light of the evolving landscape of film consumption, it's clear that the industry is shifting away from a one-size-fits-all model, acknowledging that audiences now have diverse preferences for how they experience storytelling. With the widespread adoption of 4K large screens and advanced sound systems in homes, some films are now being crafted specifically for in-home viewing. These may feature characteristic tailored to this environment. Additionally, with the advent of devices like Apple's ProVision, some films will be made for a more dramatic immersive personal experiences that leverages this viewing technology.
Conversely, certain films will still be designed with the theatrical experience in mind, capitalizing on the unique communal atmosphere that only cinemas can provide. This bifurcation signifies a broader transformation within the industry, leading to a richer variety of storytelling methods and greater opportunities for creators and audiences alike.
Theaters, in response, would do well to heed Theodore Levitt's advice and reconsider their core business proposition. It's no longer just about movies in theaters, but about showcasing the movie viewing experience to audience whether it is in-theaters, in-home, or directly in the viewers eyes through an in-goggle immersive experience. Ultimately, it's about curating the movies to audiences. By embracing this paradigm, theaters can remain relevant and vital in an increasingly segmented market.
He makes a lot of good points. Worth reading in full.
"Martin Scorsese expanded upon his opinions on the current state of cinema during a press conference at the Berlin Film Festival, where he is receiving an Honorary Golden Bear.
When asked if cinema could be dying, Scorsese said he prefers to think of the industry as “transforming.”
“I don’t think it’s dying at all, no. I think it’s transforming,” Scorsese said. “It never was meant to be one thing. We were used to it being one thing. I grew up [with cinema] as one thing: if you wanted to see a movie you went to a theater. A good theater or a bad theater, but it was a theater. It was always a communal experience.”"

DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE continued to sizzle in theatres, bringing in an additional $97M in its second weekend. The Marvel superhero sequel has grossed $395M in its first 10 days, making it the second highest earning movie of 2024 behind Pixar’s INSIDE OUT 2 which has earned $627M since its June 14th opening. In fact, the R-rated DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE has earned more than the PG-rated INSIDE OUT 2 had at the same point in its release.
The two films have anchored the summer box office, beginning on 6/11 with INSIDE OUT 2 and continuing through 7/26 with DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE. Sprinkle in a little DESPICABLE ME 4 on 7/3 and TWISTERS on 7/19 and the summer of 2024 has turned into quite a tasty dish for exhibitors.

SATURDAY AM EARLY: IF is looking at $30.5M opening this weekend after a $10M Friday + previews, at 4,041 theaters and while that might scream lower than expected on the surface since it’s below its $40M projections, triple note, it’s a PG-rated live-action film. There’s a reason why they haven’t been greenlit in a while, and let’s not slam Paramount and John Krasinsksi for swinging for the fences on original content. Here’s the upside: with an A CinemaScore, this family movie is bound to leg out and fill a niche in the summer despite 50% Rotten reviews. That’s just what family movies do. Rotten Tomatoes audience score is 85% fresh. At that starting point, IF‘s opening is just north of Ryan Reynold’s Free Guy ($28.3M), a previous piece of original IP for the actor. That PG-13 movie cleared $121.6M back in the late summer/early fall of 2021.
Get ready for another magical weekend at the movies!
Wicked (11/22) and Moana 2 (11/27) are smashing pre-sale records, showing the strong demand for family-friendly, nostalgic films that can't be matched anywhere else! And there's more to look forward to with Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (12/20) and Mufasa: The Lion King (12/20) coming this December!
Deadline to be onscreen is approaching faster than a gang of flying monkeys! Let's talk about what cinema advertising can do for YOUR business!

Top 10 Underrated Movies of the Decade You Need to Watch
In the vast ocean of cinema, certain films capture the limelight, while others, equally deserving, drift into the shadows. The past decade has seen a treasure trove of movies that, despite their brilliance, haven't received the attention they deserve. Here’s a list of ten underrated movies from the last ten years that you absolutely need to watch.

Universal Pictures' "The Fall Guy" saw a Monday morning drop to $27.7M, following a lower-than-expected Sunday of $6.9M, down 33% from Saturday. Global earnings stand at $64.4M, slightly below projections. Concerns arise over star power, particularly Ryan Gosling post-"Barbie." Despite Gosling's extensive promotion efforts, "Fall Guy" marks his third-highest opening domestically, with "Barbie" being an exception. In today's discerning #streaming era, original #Hollywood action #films face challenges. However, Gosling's potential in Amazon MGM Studios' "Project Hail Mary" remains promising. Lately, Gosling consistently delivers openings around $20M+.
Consider this: "The Fall Guy" isn't your typical #summer#blockbuster; it's the kind of film you'd expect in August, the second weekend of June, or even during the off-season, as originally planned for March 1. Had the production costs been lower than the $130M-$150M range, there wouldn't be as much scrutiny.
