When it comes to climate innovation, the private sector is critical for driving change - and investing in climate does not need to be concessionary! In the past, philanthropy and inter-developmental institutions were leading efforts against climate change. But today, it's totally shifting in a new direction. It’s the private sector that’s the best at scaling solutions - government and academia are just not built to expand innovative solutions in the same manner. Here's why I see the private sector will continue expanding this market in impactful ways: 1️. Climate Dynamics While the discourse on climate change may vary, the global consensus is strong. Recent events (like the severe heat crisis in East Africa, for instance) only underscore the pressing need for immediate action. 2️. Governmental Backing Governments across the globe, from the EU and China to the US, are mobilizing resources to address climate challenges. Through substantial funding and policy support, they're paving the way for innovative climate solutions to thrive on a global scale. They’re creating the ecosystem and infrastructure that will allow new businesses to flourish. 3️. Environmental Awareness Gen Z and Gen Alpha are (of course) very aware of environmental issues. That means there's a growing foundation in which people can - and will - build companies around sustainability. This new generation of leaders is driving innovation and entrepreneurship in this space. It’s clear that climate innovation is an expanding market - and the opportunity there is significant. By digging in now, the private sector can capitalize on its potential and (more importantly) pave the way to a greener future.

Climate change is foremost. Ways must be found to win popular support to accelerate the shift to a low-carbon future. It requires a fair transition, one that overcomes the anxieties over costs that have led to pushback within many populations. But it also means overcoming the short-sightedness that is now the norm in most societies, so as to ensure fairness not only today but also for future generations. Likewise, the challenge of meeting the needs of steadily ageing societies, without sending the invoice to the next generation. And so too, dealing with AI (artificial intelligence) – the most profound technological change of our times, with benefits as well as risks that are likely to grow exponentially in the coming decade and beyond.  We can address these long challenges only by stretching our economic and political horizons. And by finding ways to rebuild optimism and solidarity within our societies, so that people can imagine how the future can be better for all. The collective belief in the future has to be both the means and the end.

🌦️ Is Climate Tech in Developing Countries Poised to Suffer Due to a Lack of Funding? 💰 The COP29 Global Climate Finance talks concluded with a deal to fund $300 billion per year to support poor nations in mitigating carbon emissions and combating climate damage. However, several countries, including India, opposed the deal, stating that it’s too little and too late. According to them, the previous goal of $100 billion in funding by the year 2020 has not yet been fulfilled. The actual need is five times the proposed amount. With hundreds of startups in climate tech blossoming in these developing countries that are victims of climate change, a funding crunch could severely hamper efforts to achieve global climate goals. On the other hand, we see more and more denials of climate change occurring. They claim it’s only one of the Earth's natural processes. It's undeniable that some major setbacks have punctuated our collective efforts to combat #climatechange. Yet, not all setbacks are synonymous with defeat. The Global Sustainable Futures Network provides an integrated approach targeted to the scientific and non-scientific to foster increased engagement directed to ‘common but differentiated responsibilities’ to solve the climate crisis, including finance and technology needed for low carbon growth, and coordinate inter-sectoral coherence towards macroeconomic, financial, trade and industrial policies, required for regional growth and development and building regional resilience to climate change.
