I remember desperatly needing a job and avoiding major red flags and gut feelings during the interview process just so I could land one. What did that get me...right back into another toxic environment. One that didn't get me for me. Value the hard work I put in. And where I felt like I had to prove myself every day just to be seen as an equal. And I so don't want that for you. So here are some work culture red flags 🚩🚩 I want you to look out for during your next interview process: 🚩The company has a hella high turnover rate...especially for POC. 🚩The leadership team is stacked with cisgender white men. 🚩Company-wide diversity is also non-existent. 🚩Company culture is defined by snacks, happy hours, and craft beers. 🚩There is zero flexibility or work-from-home options. And how can you avoid them? Make sure to ask these key questions when you are vetting your next company: *What are your diversity values and how do you translate them into practice? *How do you create an inclusive environment? *Do you track diversity metrics? If so how often and how do you openly discuss them with staff? *How are you addressing pay equity? *Do you have employee resource groups? What are they focusing on and how have they helped you meet your goals? *Do you conduct anti-racism and anti-bias training? *How do you make people feel included in meetings? *How do you handle when people get interrupted or talked over? *Do you provide professional development training or funds? *How are promotions and pay raises decided? Don't just jump into your next job or company. Take some time to make sure your next move is the right move. And you land with a company that sees, values, and pays you what you deserve.
