As a tech startup, scaling fast is thrilling, but keeping cloud costs under control? Not so much. The question becomes: which cloud cost model works well for optimal spending?💸 Here's a breakdown of common models and their suitability with startups: 1. Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG): Simple and transparent, you only pay for what you use. Great for unpredictable workloads, but costs can spiral for rapidly growing teams. 2. Reserved Instances (RIs): Commit to upfront payment for reserved capacity at a discount. Ideal for predictable workloads, but inflexibility can sting if needs change. 3. Spot Instances: Bid on unused capacity at steep discounts. Perfect for non-critical tasks, but reliability is unreliable. 4. Committed Use Discounts (CUDs): Commit to a certain spend over a period for a discount. Offers some flexibility compared to RIs, but still less adaptable than PAYG. One of best ways to cut costs in early stages (but less known/used) is to setup your infra to port/work seamlessly across ANY and all major providers [Amazon Web Services (AWS) Microsoft Azure Google Cloud] -- not that hard to do it if you can write most of it via #Terraform and supporting tooling. It's been one of our best RoI decisions. This has already saved us $500K+ and will almost guarantee that your COGS stays in the low single digits!
