At Gresham House we believe that a key solution to resolving the global housing crisis will be the use of mass timber 🌳 The updates below on the Canadian Limberlost Place project show the continued development and capabilities of #masstimber in construction. While these showcase buildings around the world are catching attention, there is an increasing adoption of mass timber in more general construction, supporting our forecast that industrial roundwood consumption will increase 2.7 times by 2050, a 3.1% increase per annum, highlighted in our Global Timber Outlook. Mass timber is a revolutionary material in the construction industry, and it is fantastic to see the developments of projects like this! Key mass-timber features to highlight: 🔎 Potential for local sourcing: The glue laminated, and cross laminated timber used in Limberlost Place has been sourced from Canada 👷♂️ Faster construction times: The modular construction enables faster construction times, helping to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget ⬇️ Carbon negative: Mass timber is carbon negative, both assisting with net-zero targets and avoiding emissions from alternative, emissions intensive building materials 🔥 Enhanced fire resistance: Mass timber has enhanced fire resistance compared to traditional construction materials This article highlights Limberlost Place, the first institutional building to be constructed from mass timber in Ontario, Canada. Even more impressively, it is the world’s first net-zero mass-timber building to be heated and cooled by a unique lake-based district heating system. This remarkable ten-story building in downtown Toronto showcases the future of sustainable buildings. A modular construction and prefabrication approach has helped to streamline the construction process, highlighting the efficiency that can come with mass timber construction. Gresham House is the 7th largest sustainable commercial forestry asset manager globally by value. https://lnkd.in/eJ83qhN5 #sustainableconstruction #netzero #innovation #greenbuilding #investmentopportunities

🇺🇸 Biden-Harris Admin Backs Mass Timber Tech to Fix Housing Crisis 🏠 Ahead of the election, the US government is pushing to become a global leader in mass timber construction, a priority for addressing the housing crisis. Just over two weeks before the opening of the Portland International Airport expansion—one of the world’s largest mass timber projects—the Biden-Harris administration is doubling down on its investment in mass timber. 🔍 Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Strategic Investment: The Department of Commerce, through the $10 billion bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, has designated the Pacific Northwest Mass Timber Tech Hub as one of 31 “Tech Hubs.” This hub, led by Oregon State University, aims to lower the industry’s carbon footprint and increase housing affordability. 2️⃣ Federal Support: Deputy Assistant Secretary Cristina Killingsworth emphasised the importance of this hub in bolstering America’s competitiveness and ensuring future industries and jobs start, grow, and remain in the Oregon and Washington region. 3️⃣ Legislative Action: US Congress is debating the Mass Timber Buildings Act, which mandates a preference in federal building contracts for mass timber products. This could revolutionise the construction of public buildings, including schools, colleges, office buildings, and military installations. 🗣️According to Thomas Henry DeLuca, Dean of the Oregon State College of Forestry, the Mass Timber Tech Hub builds on the region’s expertise in wood products research and development. The TallWood Design Institute is already investing heavily in modular manufacturing and affordable housing solutions, driving economic growth and policy change. 🔗 For more details on the implications of the Mass Timber Tech Hub and the Mass Timber Buildings Act, visit Wood Central’s special feature: https://lnkd.in/gQUCUQcp 🗣️ #questionforgroup: How do you see mass timber technology impacting the future of housing and construction? As Georgia rapidly continues to grow, so does the opportunity to use #MassTimber in residential, mixed use, and commercial developments. In 2022, Jamestown did not hesitate to choose mass timber for construction of 619 Ponce @poncecitymarket. This building is a first-of-its-kind, as it’s made with locally grown AND sourced forest products. “With Georgia’s forests growing 48 percent more tree volume than is harvested annually, our state can continue to be a leader in mass timber manufacturing and construction, grown right here in our backyard,” said Matt Hestad, Senior Vice President of GFF. So why build with Mass timber? 🌎 It requires substantially lower embodied carbon than conventional building materials 🔨 Is 25-40% faster to build 🚗 Causes 90% less construction traffic 🔥 Is fire-resistant and resilient to earthquakes 🪵 Is 30% lighter and as strong as concrete and steel 🏠 Provides a sense of well-being for residents 📈 Increases demand for wood ensuring a healthy market Most importantly, mass timber allows #Georgia to grow in a #sustainable way. @georgiaforestry @jamestown.lp @smartlam_north_america @georgiapacific @forestresourceconsultants @structurecraft @u.s.forestservice #HouseBill777 #Construction #Residential #Commercial #Buildings #LocallyGrown #Wood #LocallySourced #ForestProducts

Our Province should be a centre for mass timber excellence. We have a unique opportunity in our Province to create a supply chain that utilizes local timber resources, creates local jobs, incentivizes investment, and creates housing to address a regional housing crisis, all while improving the sustainability of our construction sector. "Let's really re-invest in our province and try to give people the financial incentive. Perhaps you can require them to use a local supplier. I think that would be a great story, because those local suppliers are also using regional wood products, so you're stimulating the economy in a different way." Stryke Group is looking at a number of opportunities to include mass timber as structure and as design elements in our projects. We are looking forward to working with progressive partners and stakeholders, as we build on our experience and understanding of the opportunities our team has! A big shout out to my old team at Adera Development Corporation for continuing to demonstrate leadership in mass timber construction in BC🙏🏽👊🏼 Thanks Howard Chai and Storeys for the great write on this important topic. 🙏🏽 #masstimber #CLT #housingcrisis #bcrealestate #vancouverrealestate #bcpoli #cdnpoli #investment #supplychain #sustainability #ghgemissions #GHG #construction #modularconstruction #prefabrication #forestry #leadership #innovation

Updates to the BC Building Code will benefit people in the building and housing sectors with the expanded use of mass timber in taller buildings, as well as schools, libraries and retail. The Province is adopting building-code changes to permit the use of mass timber in buildings, such as schools, shopping centres and housing, so they can be built faster and more sustainably. “These changes will help reduce carbon pollution, support the forestry sector, create jobs, build more homes and lead to more vibrant communities,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing. “We know mass timber looks great, and now we can use it in larger buildings and more types of buildings.” https://lnkd.in/e_jhXuZn
