From a recent trip. What do these two aircraft have in common, besides taking peculiar people to peculiar places? 👀 Both the 737-600 and the 747SP have larger tails than their original base models to counter assymetric thrust in an engine-out scenario. The 736 has the new, big engines on the original small -200 fuselage, and the 747SP has the original engines on a shorter fuselage.

Krueger Flaps Krueger flaps are high lift devices that are fitted to all or part of the leading edge of the wings of some aircraft types. The aerodynamic effect of Krueger flaps is similar to that of slats; however, they are deployed differently. Krueger flaps are mounted on the bottom surface of the wing and are hinged at their leading edges. Actuators extend the flap down and forwards from the under surface of the wing thus increasing the wing camber which, in turn, increases lift. #Avgeekfriday time again! Have you ever noticed that aircraft engines often appear slightly angled inward? There’s a fascinating reason behind it. This design feature called "toe-in," aligns the engines with the local airflow, which tends to diverge slightly outward under the wing. If the engines were mounted parallel to the fuselage, they’d move at an angle through the airflow, generating unnecessary drag. On the Boeing 747 here, this is particularly evident. Its four engines are angled 2 degrees towards the fuselage to reduce drag and improve efficiency. But what about aircraft with rear-mounted engines, like the MD80? In those cases, the opposite occurs! The engines are mounted with a slight "toe-out" to match the converging airflow at the tail. With tri-jets like the MD-11 and DC-10, it's the same situation as well, with engine number 2 being angled slightly to the back. And there you have it! Ever wondered why T-tails are so popular in business jets but rarely seen in military or commercial aviation? ✈️ The answer lies in the unique advantages and trade-offs of this design. Reliable folding mechanisms for #future more efficient #aircraft platforms at #ILABerlin. ✈️ ➡️ Large wingspan and still suited to the #airport infrastructure? The folding wing tip actuation system, which we developed for the Boeing #777X familiy, makes it possible. The larger #wingspan increases fuel #efficiency of the aircraft. On the ground, however, the tips of the wings fold simply, reducing the wingspan from 71.8 metres to 64.9 metres. This allows the 777X to use the same airport gates as all other 777s, a great convenience for #airlines and passengers. Boeing 707 Fuselage Legacy (sound ON for easy narration)... 1,000 x 707s; 2,000 x 727s; 12,000 x 737s & 1,000 757s share the same original 707 fuselage design. Enabling Boeing to pool resources & use the same tooling, over & over again. Flexing of Boeing 747's wing in turbulence! The Boeing 747's wings are designed to flex during flight, including in turbulence. This flexing is a normal and intentional part of the aircraft's design. The wings are built to withstand a significant amount of stress and are designed to flex to distribute loads and enhance stability during various flight conditions, including turbulence. This flexibility helps to reduce the overall stress on the wings and the aircraft's structure, ensuring safe and efficient operation. The wings of a Boeing 747 have a surface area of about 510 square meters (5,500 square feet) and can produce as much as 390 tons (850,000 pounds) of lift.
