Everyone has a story about IV infiltrations, they just might not know that it is called an infiltration or extravasation. It has probably happened to you or someone you love. An IV should never cause pain. Jack let his nurses know his IV was hurting, but as most nurses would do, they kept the IV in since there were no clinical signs of infiltration at the time - no swelling, no redness, or difficulty flushing. This is exactly why continuous patient monitoring is crucial for IV therapy. Since Jack's injury, this hospital has implemented continuous IV monitoring technology. BOTH ELECTRICAL AND PLUMBING DEPEND ON EACHOTHER
I sat down yesterday and read the Jan/Feb 2024 edition of the ENA Connection journal (lol intriguing right 😊 ). The AHA outlined the difference between cardiac arrest and a heart attack. I read this and thought about how it applies to a case I am working on. In this case, throughout the medical records, providers and nursing staff use the terms cardiac arrest and heart attack interchangeably. However, when you dive into the details, the patient had an ELECTRICAL problem that caused a lack of circulation, not an initial circulatory problem (no blocked artery). We get comfortable with our hospital slang and verbiage. It's important to keep in mind when documenting in the EHR, to use correct and consistent terminology.
