Mechanic Shop Owners. We are in a viscous cycle of stealing each others technicians by increasing wages. We are becoming the problem that will be putting these young technicians into danger. Each time these transfers happen we expect their high wages to come with a certain amount of experience to offset their ROI to maintain shop margains. With these increased wages we expect tech 4 performance, but they only have tech 1 experience and skill set. We are at a point that shop accidents are becoming more and more common because they don’t have the necessary experience or the time it takes to grow in this industry. I encourage all of us to slow down and consider the consequences of our actions.

I have operated a variety of forklifts throughout my career, including standard sit-down counterbalance forklifts, reach trucks, articulated forklift, and order pickers. Each type has unique operational characteristics that require adaptation in my technique to ensure efficiency and safety. For instance, my experience with counterbalance forklifts has taught me the importance of maintaining a low center of gravity when maneuvering heavy loads. This reduces the risk of tipping, especially in tight spaces. When operating reach trucks, my technique focuses on precision steering and careful control of the lifting mechanism to avoid swaying or sudden movements, which could lead to instability. I understand the significance of load balance, particularly when elevating items to height, so I always assess the weight distribution before lifting. Moreover, when working with order pickers, I am very conscious of maintaining visibility while raised, ensuring no obstacles are in my path. I take time to familiarize myself with new equipment by reviewing operator manuals and familiarization programs. Continuous learning has allowed me to adapt my operational skills and techniques to suit every forklift model I encounter, enhancing my capability as a reliable forklift operator.
