To foster a culturally sensitive and supportive environment, we must equip educators and administrators to better understand the cultural norms of the communities they serve. In predominantly Caucasian spaces, students from other cultural backgrounds may face racial identity challenges that teachers must be prepared to address. Ignoring these differences under the guise of being “neutral” often means unintentionally prioritizing the dominant culture. By focusing on cultural competency, we can ensure that every student develops a healthy sense of identity and self-esteem. Let’s create an education system that values all students equally. #CulturalCompetency #EducationLeadership #InclusiveEducation #DiversityInSchools #TeacherTraining

I strongly agree that equality and diversity enrich our societies. But how many educational institutions truly embody this principle in their recruitment processes? In educational settings, forward-thinking schools recognize the impact of globalisation. They understand teachers from diverse ethnic backgrounds bring various forms of social and cultural capital, including multicultural, ethnic, transnational, and linguistic capital - that enriches the learning atmosphere. These are highly valued assets which, if properly recognised and utilised, have the potential to enrich pupils, schools and society as a whole (Wallace, 2018, Maylor, 2022; Teach First, 2023). A diverse teaching workforce can familiarise pupils from all ethnic backgrounds with people from different backgrounds and prepare them for life in an increasingly diverse world. Hearing others' experiences and perspectives can help reduce racial prejudice and improve social cohesion (DfE, 2018b, 2023a, Joseph-Salisbury, 2020, Le and Nguyen, 2019). Have you encountered any schools that prioritize incorporating international perspectives in their recruitment processes to ensure a diverse and global classroom environment? #education #educationresesrch #teaching #diversity #Equity

Inclusive pedagogies in higher ed should be tested for training in democratic and inclusive citizenship. A study using the Konstanz Method of Dilemma Discussion showed progress in moral competence, but empathy didn't enhance moral learning. #Education #Research #Inclusion #REP https://lnkd.in/d2jBa3Pu

Diversity within the educational sector has a profound impact on students, educators, and society as a whole. Here’s a quick look at why: 🔷 Diverse teaching staff brings a plethora of perspectives that enrich the curriculum, offering students a broader understanding of the global community. 🔷 Evidence suggests that students benefit academically and socially when their educators reflect their own backgrounds, creating a deeper connection and understanding. 🔷 Promoting diversity among teachers helps lay the groundwork for a more inclusive society, instilling values of tolerance and understanding from a young age. Addressing discomfort and engaging in tough conversations about schooling 🤔 In my 2008 book, ‘The Way We See It,’ I examined the uncomfortable historical connections between school exclusion and British education policies. My goal was to shift from discussing discriminatory practices to implementing research-based social inclusion strategies, inclusive policies, and relevant legislation. My objectives were to: 👉🏾 Ensure equal opportunities for all students. 👉🏾 Reflect diverse cultural backgrounds. 👉🏾 Create safe, supportive learning environments. 👉🏾 Develop policies that improve academic and social outcomes. 👉🏾 Level the playing field for marginalized groups. Since 2008, changes have been limited, and these crucial discussions need to continue. If you agree, share your thoughts in the comments below. ⬇️💬 #Education #SchoolSystem #BritishPolicies #Cultures #Equity #Teaching #DiversePupils #ALN

Our team recently participated in a workshop at Niagara University titled, "Teaching Intersectionality: Race and Disability." Key takeaways included an exploration of the concept of intersectionality, particularly in relation to race and disability, insights into effective teaching methods, and opportunities for participants to engage in discussions about applying these concepts in their courses. 💡 #Intersectionality #DisabilityInsights #TeachingMethods

Earlier in the week a groundbreaking study was released by Rutgers University Social Perception Lab and National Contagion Research Institute (NCRI) on the impact of DEI (diversity, equity & inclusion) training programs on three (3) themes -Race, Religion and Caste in the U.S. Findings are stunning! DEI training actually increases hostility on perceived ideas of the 3 themes & based on scenarios that are not even real. Not really what anyone needs in any society. DEI is a great idea but when implemented with agendas behind it can be toxic. CoHNA tweet is eye opening highlighting the findings about caste perceptions that become more embedded in people’ psyche when they receive DEI sponsored training from ‘caste activists’ like Equality Labs. Please read this tweet and the NCRI report here. https://lnkd.in/ddFkuUUM https://lnkd.in/dD_-hgqP

Is Literacy Becoming Obsolete? https://lnkd.in/ebWK86Ab Is our English Curriculum Discriminatory? Do we value what we measure, or do we measure what we value? Using Professor Nancy Doyle's recent controversial article in Forbes Magazine as a starting point, Nancy and our very own Co-Head of Education, Marius Frank, explore the ever-growing fault lines in our Education System that allow hundreds of thousands of neurodiverse and disabled children and young people to fall through the gaps, never reaching their full potential. A wide-ranging discussion will explore the profound disconnect between our current National Curriculum and examination system and the 21st Century Workplace, the challenge of building personal effectiveness alongside knowledge, the impact of a traditional school culture and climate on some neurodiverse children... and the real reasons why some children skip classes. Register for our webinar on the 19th of March @ 10am https://lnkd.in/ebWK86Ab #Literacy #Education #EducationSystem #Neurodiversity #Neurodiverse #Disability #NeurodiverseChildren #NationalCurriculum Genius Within CIC

I am baffled by some of the comments in this. I know they are not novel, but it always catches me off guard still. Topic: Teaching Religion vs Gender Identity in K-12 schools Panelist A admits that they do not understand WHY gender identity needs to be discussed in classrooms. Panelist B challenges them by posing why can religion be discussed, but not gender identity. Panelist A stands 10 toes down and says verbatim "How is discussing gender identity making someone more literate, making someone more successful?" Then continues to defend that religion is actual history that students need to know about... Panelist B bounces back with both can and should be presented in school, but not from the viewpoint of indoctrinating one belief over the other. Students have the right to learn about the existence of different gender identities just as much as they can have awareness of the existence of multiple religions. -------- I hope it goes without saying that I am aligned with Panelist B. I ask you: Why is it important for students to learn about both the diversity of religious beliefs and the spectrum of gender identities in their formative years?
