It’s time for another Q&A and this week, we’re answering a question we’re often asked about our visual grade glulam beams - what finish should I choose? Prolam PL8 and PL12 visual beams are available in a variety of finishes, which adds to their versatility as a solution for exposed timber features in interior and exterior spaces. Choosing a finish comes down to the look and feel you want, with each finish lending itself to different applications and architectural aesthetics – from rustic Bandsawn to refined Sanded & Sealed finishes. So what’s the difference between the finishes? 🪓A Bandsawn Finish is only available in visual grade beams. The surfaces are bandsawn to a high-quality rustic finish, with all surface voids filled and only small tight knots permitted. ⚙️Machine Finished is where the beam is planer machined to a high-quality finish, with all surface voids filled and only small tight knots permitted. 🖌️Sanded & Sealed is a premium finish. All blemishes are filled, and the entire beam is sanded and then coated with a sealer. Ready for a long-term sealer to be applied before the beam is stained or painted. 🎨Pre-Primed visual beams have a primary coat applied in our factory. This protective coat stops moisture ingress until an undercoat and topcoat is applied.
