We have our summer intern already on week two. Every Friday he has to report on the project that he's responsible for. He makes us aware of urgent items and things needing action. We have different people on our team that work with him on different parts of his project. That way he's accountable for his work while getting exposure to working with everyone on our team including Grant La Bounty, Chris Vassilian and Jeannette Cano. That gives him experience from four different points of view. But ultimately, we make sure one person is responsible for his success and so that he knows who he can turn to when thinking about future direction without ambiguity. This will be the second year of working with other industry partners to collaborate on meetings together so that our interns get to meet their interns and make new contacts. How do you manage your summer interns? How do you make the most of the summer for them and for your team all at the same time?

Now that I oversee the Internship Program here at Chegg, I've been learning a lot about the landscape. According to a new report from the Business-Higher Education Forum, of the 8.2 million learners who wanted to intern in 2023, 56% missed out completely. And the experience varies significantly based on race and whether the student is attending a two-year or four-year institution. "Hispanic students from two-year and four-year programs and Black students from two-year programs are the most likely to miss out on having an internship—primarily because they did not apply—and Asian students from four-year programs are most likely to be rejected." All of this matters because internships aren't just valuable for students, they're valuable opportunities for employers to tap into the veritable wealth of knowledge and insight that students can bring. There's a lot of things that need to change in the macro to not only open up more internship opportunities but also reduce the inequity, but I do think there is one thing those of us who operate these programs can do in the micro - reduce the barrier for students to apply. I have personally read job descriptions for internships that were as long as 8 pages or as short as two bullet points. Neither does the job at properly conveying the responsibilities and expectations for an intern, and that doesn't make anyone want to apply. Also, if you're open to students from two-year programs, then say it explicitly. And if you're not, why aren't you? Shoutout to Marshall Anthony Jr., Ph.D. for sharing this report with my team. It's Friday, do you know what your intern weekend policy is? Meaning, do you want know what the Saturday policy is and have interns been encouraged to follow it? If you're not sure, here are people to ask (and yes, you should clarify): 1. Your buddy (typically a second year Analyst) 2. Your staffer 3. Teams you are staffed with (ask how to proceed w/weekend requests) Make sure you not only know the weekend policy, but the expectations of the team with whom you have staffings. - If they have a major meeting Monday, they might need all hands on deck - If they have a bake off Tuesday, they may need you for a big portion - If you are waiting on comments, you can ask when it's appropriate to respond You can never be TOO over communicative. So clarify needs over every weekend of your internship without jeopardizing your experience and ignoring policies that are in place.
