Recent data by Mercer and Global Disability Inclusion, LLC found that among workers with disabilities, 51% report mental health as their primary disability. With data gathered from more than 5 million employees, the report sheds light on the ubiquity of mental health conditions in the workforce and their likelihood to be glossed over as “invisible” disabilities. CEOs have a significant role to play in addressing the needs of employees with disabilities. Making up 7% of the workforce, these employees are more likely to be disengaged and feel excluded within their organisations as a result of institutional stigma. Leaders can influence the culture of their organisations by modelling and instituting inclusive behaviour while destigmatising speaking up about mental health. This study also highlights the important of the upcoming Workplace Fairness Legislation, which will prohibit workplace discrimination on disability and mental health conditions, among others. My favourite part of the role is getting to meet so many people I may not have otherwise had the opportunity to meet in my everyday life. My role includes completing assessments, writing reports and carrying out case management for the BBC and Channel 4. I have a psychology degree and experience providing mental health support to people in crisis, both face-to-face and virtually. This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week! Neurodiversity covers a broad spectrum of neurological differences, from autism to ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia and more, each of which bring unique new strengths and perspectives. However, with most social systems intended to play to the strengths of the majority neurotypical population, it's important to actively champion neurodiversity in order to support those whose brains work in different ways. We spoke to Sam Clark, our CEO, about why it's so important to celebrate neurodiversity: "I am neurodiverse myself, along with more than 15% of the UK population. Being the CEO of a business with around 100 employees, it is important that I ensure inclusivity and awareness is promoted throughout our workplace. Neurodiversity Celebration Week is an ideal opportunity for TDS to learn more about, and celebrate, neurodiversity in the workplace. Set out on our first day of the Disability:IN Conference in Vegas today with committee meetings for mental wellness, reasonable accommodations and procurement. The best parts of today's meetings were the roundtable discussions that allowed for collaboration on what others are seeing and doing in their organizations. Some highlights were with AI as it relates to diagnosing/treating mental wellness and AI for improving the process for accommodation requests. #disabilityin #reasonableaccommodations #diversity #diversityandinclusion #diversityequityinclusion

As mental health awareness month rolls out and pride month rolls in, I wonder how many hours of unpaid labour corporations have casually demanded from visibly disabled and queer people in their workforce…. To be clear, the unpaid labour I’m referring to here also includes emotional labour that pertains to: > “educating” people about queer/mental health communities > “brainstorming” ideas about how to engage with customers and talent pool on social media > “championing” the organisation’s brand values by sharing lived experiences This sort of labour should never be expectated from employees. #pridemonth #mentalhealth #labour #psychology
